  1. 21. Antioxidant Capacity in Fruit and Vegetables -Cultivar Variation - Storage Conditions - Human Antioxidant Status

    Author : Jessica Nilsson; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; human plasma antioxidants; Brassica; strawberry; pea; cultivar; ABTS; FRAP; Total antioxidant capacity; TAC; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik;

    Abstract : The health-promoting effects of fruits and vegetables have been extensively discussed during the past decade since epidemiologic studies have shown relations between increased intake of fruit and vegetables and decreased incidences of several chronic diseases. It has been suggested that antioxidants are a main contributors to the observed effects, for example by acting as scavengers of free radicals. READ MORE

  2. 22. Aspects on the cytokine load in trauma with special reference to blood components and local versus systemic cytokine activity

    Author : Marianne Kristiansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Autotransfusion Coagulation Cytokines Cytokine inhibitors Fibrinolysis Infection Red blood cell concentrates Surgery Trauma. Stockholm 1997;

    Abstract : Cytokines and their inhibitors are thought to be involved in many of the pathophysiological changes associated with trauma and infection. Therapeutic measures such as transfusion of blood components could have a bearing on the systemic cytokine load in these conditions. READ MORE

  3. 23. Usefulness of archival biobank samples for genetic epidemiologic studies

    Author : Malin Sjöholm; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : formailn-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue; biobank; serum; dried blood spots; plasma; archival samples;

    Abstract : Sweden has a long history of maintaining population-based registries and biobanks. This has resulted in large sample collections with long follow-up and large numbers of prospectively occurring disease endpoints providing an extensive resource for genetic research. READ MORE

  4. 24. Cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apnea in humans

    Author : Johan Andersson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lung volume; breath-hold diving; Apnea; breath-holding; face immersion; cold stimulation; diving response; diving reflex; circulation; bradycardia; vasoconstriction; arterial blood pressure; cardiac output; spleen; respiration; splenic contraction; alveol; Physiology; Fysiologi; Respiratory system; Andningsorganen; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with cardiovascular and respiratory effects of apneas in humans. During apnea (breath-holding), a number of interacting cardiovascular reflexes are initiated, and together these reflexes are called the “diving response”. READ MORE

  5. 25. Bioanalysis using capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry : Applied on proteins, protein nanofibrils and polyvinyl alcohol microbubbles

    Author : Leila Josefsson; Åsa Emmer; Ulrika Nilsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; : amyloid; capillary electrophoresis; contrast agents; detection; human blood plasma; ionic liquids; mass spectrometry; microbubbles; polyvinyl alcohol microbubbles; protein nanofibrils; proteins; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : The sequencing of the genome of various species, including the human species, have led to increased understanding about how a protein structure is generated, and how specific structures are related to the proteins’ functionality. In paper I and II of this thesis, the folding of proteins in vitro to form hierarchical nanostructures, which in vivo often have a pathological effect, have been studied. READ MORE
