  1. 1. Effects of acute metabolic interventions on hemodynamics, endothelial function and forearm glucose uptake

    Author : Andreas Fugmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Insulin; glucose; lipids; bloodflow; endothelium; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Hyperinsulinemia is known to augment endothelium-dependent.vasodilation (EDV). If physiological levels of insulin lead to peripheral, vasodilation and if this vasodilation is an independent determinant of skeletal muscle glucose uptake is however under debate. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and nitric oxide

    Author : Kristina Hambraeus Jonzon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia; pulmonary vasoconstriction; regional pulmonary bloodflow; stimulus-response; nitric oxide; blood-borne distant effects; nitric oxide synthase activity; inhaled; exhaled; non-enzymatic;

    Abstract : Hypoxia causes pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), improving oxygenation by redistribution of the pulmonary blood flow to better oxygenated lung regions. HPV is intrinsic to the pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cell, but can be modulated by several vasoactive substances, as for example endothelium derived nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1). 3. 3. Response of human skeletal muscle to chronic and acute exercise and ischemia : muscle dimensions, tissue water and blood flow as measured by magnetic resonance imaging and comparative methods

    Author : Anders T Nygren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Bloodflow; cross-sectional area; exercise; fiber area; Gd-DTPA; glycogen; human; hypotrophy; intermittent claudication; ischemia; magnetic resonance imaging; metabolism; perfusion; reflex sympathetic activity skeletal muscle; training; transverse relaxation; ultrasonography.;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate the response of human skeletal muscle to exercise, training and ischemi and to evaluate if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) could be used to measure regional muscle cross-sectional area, muscle perfusion and detect muscle ischemia in patients with intermittent claudication. For this purpose studies were performed on 29 healthy young volunteers and 7 patients with intermittent claudication. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development of Methods to Investigate Pulmonary Arterial Smooth Muscle Cells under Hypoxia

    Author : Joel Wahl; Kerstin Ramser; Mikael Sjödahl; Fredrik Nikolajeff; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Experimental Mechanics; Experimentell mekanik;

    Abstract : Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV) is a physiological response to localized alveolarhypoxia that is intrinsic to the pulmonary circulation. By hypoxia-induced contractionof pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cells (PASMCs), the pulmonary capillary bloodflow is redirected to alveolar areas of high oxygen partial pressure, thus maintaining theventilation-perfusion ratio. 5. 5. Gastric gland luminal pressure and mucosal protection : An in vivo study in the anesthetized rat

    Author : Ingrid Synnerstad; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; acid secretion; bicarbonate; epithelial cell surface pH; gastric gland; muscularismucosa; micropuncture; mucosal blood flow; mucus gel thickness; omeprazole; permeability; prostaglandins; ranitidine; rat; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Abstract : The driving force for creation of channels in gastric mucus, for acid and pepsin transport, ismost probably the hydrostatic pressure generated within the gastric gland lumen. The aim ofthis study was to investigate the origin and regulation of the glandular pressure. READ MORE
