  1. 16. Physical performance, physical activity, body composition and exercise training in adults with congenital heart disease

    Author : Camilla Sandberg; Bengt Johansson; Karin Wadell; Lena Jonasson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adult congenital heart disease; physical performance; physical activity; body composition; exercise training; sjukgymnastik; Physiotherapy;

    Abstract : Background Adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) is a growing population and related to advances in surgical and medical treatment, they now outnumber the children with corresponding lesions. Since a congenital heart lesion often results in reduced exercise capacity, this population is a potential target for physiotherapy. READ MORE

  2. 17. Metabolic, methodological and developmental aspects of body composition : Studies in women and children with special reference to early life mechanisms behind childhood obesity

    Author : Britt Eriksson; Elisabet Forsum; Marie Löf; Jonathan Wells; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : In recent decades the number of children with overweight has increased worldwide. To understand the mechanisms behind this development, knowledge regarding metabolism and physiology in relation to the nutritional situation in early life is of importance. READ MORE

  3. 18. Maternal investment in male and female offspring in the fallow deer

    Author : Björn Birgersson; Kjell Wallin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal physiology; Zoofysiologi; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I investigate whether mothers of the polygynous fallow deer, Dama dama, bias their investment towards male offspring. I aim to answer the specific questions: (i) how is offspring fitness related to maternal investment?; (ii) do male fawns grow faster than female fawns during the period of maternal investment, and if so, why?; (iii) are male fawns more costly to raise than female fawns?; (iv) do fallow deer mothers adjust the sex of their offspring in relation to their ability to invest resources? To answer these questions I have collected and analysed data on reproduction of an enclosed fallow deer population and also performed an experimental study in which the level of investment was controlled for. 4. 19. Regulation of Leptin by Sexual Maturation and Energy Status in Male Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.) Parr

    Author : Susanne Trombley; Monika Schmitz; Sylvie Dufour; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Leptin; leptin receptor; Atlantic salmon; Salmo salar; sexual maturation; puberty; energy balance; hepatocytes; sex steriods; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : Leptin is a peripheral adiposity signal and a key hormone in energy balance regulation in mammals, acting as a link between nutritional status and the endocrine reproductive axis. If this is also the role of leptin in fish is not fully understood. READ MORE
