  1. 1. Body Image Across Cultures and Ethnic Groups

    Author : Kristina Holmqvist; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Body Image; Body dissatisfaction; Dieting; Culture; Ethnicity;

    Abstract : Studying body image across cultures and ethnic groups is essential if we are to understand the cultural framework that influences how people view and feel about their bodies. The objective of Study I was to cross-culturally examine differences in body satisfaction, dieting and weight loss attempts, and perceived body shape among 13-year-old Argentinean (n=358) and Swedish (n=874) adolescents. 2. 2. From Cell Shape to Body Shape: Epithelial Morphogenesis in Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Shai Mulinari; Sociologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Odd-skipped; morphogenesis; Hedgehog; segment boundaries; segmental grooves; Actin; Drosophila; DRhoGEF2; Myosin; Diaphanous; Rho GTPase; cytoskeleton; Rho1;

    Abstract : Embryonic development is associated with extensive rearrangements of tissues. The driving force for these rearrangements is generated by a dynamic reorganization of the Actin cytoskeleton of individual cells. READ MORE

  3. 3. Flow Control and Shape Optimization of Intermediate Turbine Ducts for Turbofan Engines

    Author : Fredrik Wallin; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; CFD; response surface methodology; intermediate turbine duct; vortex generators; turbine intermediate case; endwall contouring; turbine center frame; body-force model; shape optimization; mid-turbine frame; flow control;

    Abstract : Demands on improved efficiency, reduced emissions and lowered noise levels cause a strive towards high by-pass ratios of commercial turbofan engines. This results in an increased radial offset between the high- and low-pressure turbines. Thus the design of the intermediate turbine duct connecting the two turbines becomes more challenging. 4. 4. Shape and Being Shaped : Sketching with Haptics in Soma Design

    Author : Charles Windlin; Kristina Höök; Jarmo Laaksolahti; Anders Lundström; Bill Buxton; KTH; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sketching; Soma Design; Constructive Design Research; Haptic Interaction Design; first-person; Människa-datorinteraktion; Human-computer Interaction;

    Abstract : Sketching is an integral part of the design process, and it often occurs in the early ideation phase where the focus is on expressing ideas, thoughts, and emotions, allowing them to take shape and making it possible to share them with others to propel the design process forwards. In principle, sketching is a process of externalising thoughts into visualisations, and it influences the creator and collaborators by enabling them to realise and reflect on the possibility and viability of their ideas and develop them further by adding to or subtracting from the sketches. 5. 5. Asymptotic and universal spectral estimates with applications in many-body quantum mechanics and spectral shape optimization

    Author : Simon Larson; Ari Laptev; Stefan Steinerberger; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Spectral theory; shape optimization; semiclassical asymptotics; spectral inequalities; quantum mechanics; Mathematics; Matematik;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of eight papers primarily concerned with the quantitative study of the spectrum of certain differential operators. The majority of the results split into two categories. READ MORE
