1. Electronic Transport in Strained Materials
Abstract : In this thesis the conductivity of strained materials has been investigated using density functional theory and a semiclassical transport theory based on the Boltzmann equation. In transition metals trends are reproduced without adjustable parameters. READ MORE

2. Electronic Transport in Materials
Abstract : Transport properties within the Boltzmann transport equation for metallic multi-layer structures as well as bulk materials, were the prime topic of this work. Ab initio total energy calculations for Hydrogen loaded metallic multi-layers were performed in order to shed some light onto problem of H depleted layers at the interfaces that have been experimentally observed. 3. First Principles Calculations of Electron Transport and Structural Damage by Intense Irradiation
Abstract : First principle electronic structure theory is used to describe the effect of crystal binding on radiation detectors, electron transport properties, and structural damage induced by intense irradiation. A large database containing general electronic structure results to which data mining algorithms can be applied in the search for new functional materials, a case study is presented for scintillator detector materials. 4. Radiation and matter: how do they play with each other?
Abstract : The propagation of radiation is affected by the presence of matter; at the same time, the physicochemical properties of matter are modified by the passage of radiation. The interplay of radiation and matter is of crucial importance in many modern applications: accelerated heavy ions, in particular, can be used in radiotherapeutical treatments of some cancers; moreover, they are present in the space radiation environment and represent a serious threat to the health of spaceship crews and to the functionality of electronic equipment on board. 5. Kinetic modelling of runaway in plasmas
Abstract : The phenomenon of runaway occurs in plasmas in the presence of a strong electric field, which overcomes the collisional friction acting on the charged particles moving through the plasma. A subpopulation of particles can then be accelerated to energies significantly higher than the thermal energy. READ MORE
