  1. 6. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    Author : Ann-Charlott Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adolescents; age- and gender-matched; Becker; bone densitometry; bone markers; bone mineral density; calciotropic hormones; children; DXA; DXL; Duchenne; glucocorticoids; muscular dystrophy; normative; reference values; skeleton;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. READ MORE

  2. 7. Bone Mineral Density in Haemophilila: A Treatment Outcome

    Author : Mohammed Khawaji; Malmö Klinisk koagulationsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Haemophilia; Bone mineral density; Prophylaxis; Health related quality of life; Physical activity.;

    Abstract : Background: Osteoporosis is increasingly recognised as one of the major public health problems throughout the world and has massive socioeconomic implications. It has previously been shown that patients with severe haemophilia and not receiving any prophylactic treatment render a high risk of reduced bone density. READ MORE

  3. 8. Bone mineral density in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease

    Author : Susanne Schmidt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bone mineral density; inflammatory bowel disease; children; Crohn s disease; ulcerative colitis; vitamin D; parathyroid hormone; familial resemblance; body composition; growth;

    Abstract : Low bone mineral density (BMD) has been highlighted as a potential problem in children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases in the westernized world. The mechanisms behind reduced BMD in pediatric IBD are still not completely understood, but several factors that influence bone mineralization have been discussed. READ MORE

  4. 9. Physical Activity, Bone Mass and Bone Structure in Pre-pubertal Children

    Author : Gayani Alwis; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bone size; BMD; BMC; hip structure analysis; DXA; boys; Physical activity; girls; acclerometers; school transportation;

    Abstract : Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a risk factor for fractures and much of the fracture preventive effort today is devoted to preventing low BMD. Physical activity (PA) has been described as one of the best strategies to optimize skeletal development in the growing child. READ MORE

  5. 10. Peak Bone Mass, Lifestyle Factors and Birth Weight: A study of 25-year old women

    Author : Mattias Callréus; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Peak bone mass; normative values; birth weight; physical activity; smoking; bone mineral density; bone mineral content; dual energy X-ray absorptiometry;

    Abstract : Background: Osteoporosis is a common bone disease, which does not give symptoms until the ultimate outcome, the fragility fracture occurs. Regulation of bone mass is controlled by genetic, environmental and nutritional influences. READ MORE
