  1. 1. Risk factors for bone fragility and fracture in postmenopausal women

    Author : Ola Svejme; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone Fragility; Fracture; Osteoporosis; Bone Mineral Density BMD ; Menopause; Physical activity; Bone Strength; Bone Size; Bone Densitometry;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate risk factors for bone fragility and fractures in postmenopausal women in a long-term perspective. The study period spanned from the age of 48 to age 82 and is thus unique in its length. The studied sample was homogeneous and consisted of 390 north European women from a population-based cohort. 2. 2. Changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the postmenopausal period

    Author : Henrik Ahlborg; Ortopedi - klinisk och molekylär osteoporosforskning; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedics; Surgery; hormone replacement therapy.; physical activity; bone strength; bone size; bone loss; longitudinal; Menopause; bone mineral density; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate long-term changes in bone mass and skeletal structure in the forearm in the peri- and postmenopausal period. 156 premenopausal women, at baseline aged 48 years, not taking medications and without disease processes known to interfere with bone metabolism, were followed through menopause by measurements of bone mass and skeletal structure at the cortical site of the distal radius by single photon absorptiometry, on average every second year until age 72. 3. 3. Survival of onlay bone grafts. A study in the adult rat

    Author : Monica Gordh; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rats; polytetrafluoroethylene; artificial; membrane; immunohistochemistry; cortical perforations; bone morphogenetic protein; bone marrow; bone; bone grafts; Odontologi; stomatology; Odontology; skull; tibia;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study onlay bone grafting in the adult rat to improve graft incorporation and perservation of graft size. In 167 adult isogeneic lewis rats, the size maintenance and bone formation at the graft-host interface of uni- and bicortical onlays positioned in various environments and treatments were investigated. 4. 4. Exercise in Youth and Long-Term Effects on Bone and Joints

    Author : Magnus Tveit; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; arthroplasty; BMD; bone mass; bone geometry; bone size; exercise; former athletes; fracture; fragility fracture; knee injury; osteoarthritis; osteoporosis; hip injury; runners; soccer; total joint replacement;

    Abstract : Partly due to an ageing population, the number of osteoporosis-related fractures and osteoarthritis (OA)-related hip and knee arthroplasty procedures is increasing. The individual suffering and the burden on society for these conditions is immense. READ MORE

  5. 5. Bone density, bone geometry and bone development in young men - the importance of pubertal timing and fracture history

    Author : Anna Darelid; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; peak bone mass; bone mineral density; bone development; fracture; young adulthood; men;

    Abstract : Background and objective: Peak bone mass, the maximal bone mass attained in young adulthood, is an important factor of the lifetime risk of developing osteoporosis. The aim of this thesis was to study the development of bone mineral density (BMD) and bone geometry around the time of peak bone mass in men, and also to investigate the association between pubertal timing, fracture history, bone turnover markers and BMD and bone geometry in young men.
