  1. 1. Bone alkaline phosphatase isoforms in chronic kidney disease : mineral and bone disorder

    Author : Mathias Haarhaus; Per Magnusson; Anders Fernström; Bengt Lindholm; Goce Spasovski; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is associated with increased mortality and cardiovascular complications. Disturbances in mineral metabolism occur early In study I we identified the novel BALP isoform Blx in 20% of patients with mild to moderate CKD. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on bone and mineral disorders in CKD : determinants and survival implications

    Author : Ting Jia; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Disruptions in mineral metabolism occur already at an early stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and may eventually lead to a complex of CKD - mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) characterized by alterations of the mass, turnover rate, mineralization and strength of bones, and high risk of vascular calcification, fractures and other complications resulting in worse survival. The aim of this thesis was to increase the understanding of some aspects of CKD-MBD with special emphasis on clinical and laboratory determinants and implications for clinical outcome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Assessment and monitoring of nutritional status in chronic kidney disease patients

    Author : Thiane Gama-Axelsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) often suffer from malnutrition and protein-energy wasting (PEW) resulting in poor nutritional status which is a powerful predictor of mortality. As it is not clear how well nutritional markers used in the clinical care of these patients accurately reflect nutritional status we evaluated in post-hoc, cross-sectional observational studies several common markers of malnutrition and PEW, and assessed their correlations to each other and to survival in patients with CKD stage 5 (CKD 5). 4. 4. Development and application of advanced electron microscopy techniques for materials in biological systems

    Author : Pernilla Nevsten; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; multiple-unit drug; EFTEM; EELS; cyanine dye; SSAT; cryo-TEM; virus; TEM; apoptosis; SEM; AFm; α-TCP; apatite; XEDS; TEM grid; microscopy supports;

    Abstract : Theoretically, electron microscopy and scanning probe microscopy offer information on a scale beyond the optical microscope. However, the quality of the micrograph and the obtained information is limited by the sample preparation. READ MORE

  5. 5. Invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections

    Author : Gunnar Jacobsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Staphylococcus aureus; epidemiology; risk factors; clinical presentation; mortality; recurrence; sequelae; agr; serology; colonization;

    Abstract : Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of septicaemia-related death. The aims of this thesis were to describe the epidemiology of invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections (ISA), the clinical course, and serological response in ISA in a prospective, population-based study. READ MORE
