  1. 6. Vitamin D, bone turnover markers and hCAP-18 in children with hemato-oncological diseases

    Author : Natalja Jackmann; Per Frisk; Outi Mäkitie; Jan Gustafsson; Anna Sällfors Holmqvist; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vitamin D; pediatric cancer; leukemia; bone marrow failure; hCAP-18; bone turnover markers; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Children with hemato-oncological diseases may have significant skeletal morbidities. Vitamin D is essential for the maintenance of skeletal health and may also be important for immunological functions and cancer outcomes. READ MORE

  2. 7. Chemokines and bone : lessons from in vitro and in vivo studies

    Author : Sara Rosendahl; Pernilla Lundberg; Cecilia Koskinen Holm; Elin Kindstedt; Marie Lagerquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bone homeostasis is maintained by the balanced activity of bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Inflammation in the vicinity of bone disturbs the balanced bone remodeling process, which often results in bone loss. READ MORE

  3. 8. Bone Mineral Density Determination in Children. Evaluation of a novel method and application to Duchenne muscular dystrophy

    Author : Ann-Charlott Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : adolescents; age- and gender-matched; Becker; bone densitometry; bone markers; bone mineral density; calciotropic hormones; children; DXA; DXL; Duchenne; glucocorticoids; muscular dystrophy; normative; reference values; skeleton;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall aims of this thesis were to evaluate the dual-energy X-ray and laser (DXL) method for bone densitometry measurements of the calcaneus in children, to provide reference data for bone mineral density (BMD) in the heel bone in young children and to apply the DXL technique to patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and conduct a survey about bone health of DMD patients. Study populations and methods: The DXL Calscan method was modified and adapted for measurements in children and applied to bone densitometry in all subsequent studies. READ MORE

  4. 9. Bone Metabolism in Men

    Author : Peter Gillberg; Olof Johnell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Male osteoporosis; Bone mineral density; Growth hormone; Insulin-like growth factors; Sex hormones; Growth hormone replacement; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the importance of the growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) system and sex steroids for male bone metabolism has been investigated, and the effects of continuous low dose GH replacement in GH deficient (GHD) adults. In a population-based sample of men, positive correlations were found between bone mineral density (BMD) and IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF binding protein (IGFBP)-3 and the testosterone/sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) ratio. 5. 10. Effects of Interleukin-4 and Interleukin-13 on Bone

    Author : Carl-Johan Silfverswärd; Olle Nilsson; Östen Ljunggren; Kenneth Jonsson; Li Felländer-Tsai; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Bone; Osteoblasts; Interleukin-4; Interleukin-13; Knockout; Medicin;

    Abstract : Cytokines play important roles in bone metabolism, participating in the complex interplay necessary for normal bone formation and turnover. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the effects of two anti-inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin-13 (IL-13) on bone. READ MORE
