  1. 16. Functional brain imaging of sensorimotor dysfunction and restoration : investigations of discomplete spinal cord injury and deep brain stimulation for essential tremor

    Author : Amar Awad; Johan Eriksson; Patric Blomstedt; Richard Levi; Lars Nyberg; Rick Helmich; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sensorimotor control; fMRI; discomplete spinal cord injury; essential tremor; deep brain stimulation; cerebello-thalamo-cerebral circuit; Physiology; fysiologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery; Neurology; neurologi; rehabiliteringsmedicin; Rehabilitation Medicine;

    Abstract : The nervous system exists to generate adaptive behaviour by processing sensory input from the body and the environment in order to produce appropriate motor output, and vice versa. Consequently, sensorimotor dysfunction is the basis of disability in most neurological pathologies. READ MORE

  2. 17. Decoding the complex brain : multivariate and multimodal analyses of neuroimaging data

    Author : Alireza Salami; Lars Nyberg; Cheryl Grady; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; multivariate analysis; univariate analysis; multimodal imaging; episodic memory; aging; functional magnetic resonance imaging; diffusion tensor imaging; biology; biologi; Psychology; psykologi; datoriserad bildanalys; Computerized Image Analysis;

    Abstract : Functional brain images are extraordinarily rich data sets that reveal distributed brain networks engaged in a wide variety of cognitive operations. It is a substantial challenge both to create models of cognition that mimic behavior and underlying cognitive processes and to choose a suitable analytic method to identify underlying brain networks. 3. 18. Methods for longitudinal brain imaging studies with dropout

    Author : Tetiana Gorbach; Xavier de Luna; Anders Lundquist; Martin A. Lindquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Missing data; nonignorable dropout; sensitivity analysis; uncertainty intervals; pattern-mixture models; aging; cognition; MRI; brain structure; resting-state functional connectivity; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : One of the challenges in aging research is to understand the brain mechanisms that underlie cognitive development in older adults. Such aging processes are investigated in longitudinal studies, where the within-individual changes over time are observed. However, several methodological issues exist in longitudinal analyses. 4. 19. The aging brain and changes in cognitive performance : Findings from morphometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping of iron

    Author : Ninni Persson; Håkan Fischser; Kristine B. Walhovd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; brain aging; volumes; ndividual differences; QSM; cognitive aging; iron; episodic memory; fluid-; crystalized abilities; sex differences; gender differences; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Brain aging is a heterogeneous phenomenon, and this thesis illustrates how the course of aging can vary within individuals over time and between individuals as a function of age, sex, and genetic variability. We used two contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely spin-lattice T1-weighted imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) from gradient-echo images, to picture the aging brain, by means of morphometric measures and brain-iron concentrations. 5. 20. Computational Models in Deep Brain Stimulation : Patient‐Specific Simulations, Tractography, and Group Analysis

    Author : Teresa Nordin; Karin Wårdell; Simone Hemm-Ode; Johannes D. Johansson; Harith Akram; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Anisotropy; Deep brain stimulation DBS ; Finite element method FEM ; Patient‐specific simulation; Probabilistic stimulation maps PSM ; Tractography;

    Abstract : Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an established method for symptom relief in movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor (ET), and dystonia. The therapy is based on implanting an electrode with four contacts in the deep brain structures where it provides electrical stimulation, mainly impacting the nerve tracts. READ MORE
