  1. 1. Brain Tissue Oxygenation in Traumatic Brain Injury : Experimental and Clinical Studies

    Author : Karlis Purins; Anders Lewén; Per Enblad; Oliver Sakowitz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brain tissue oxygenation; Cerebral metabolism; Traumatic brain injury; Cerebral ischemia; Threshold levels; Neurovent-PTO; Microdialysis; Neurosurgery; Neurokirurgi;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability. TBI is frequently followed by cerebral ischemia which is a great contributor to secondary brain damage. The main causes of cerebral ischemia are pathophysiological changes in cerebral blood flow and metabolism. READ MORE

  2. 2. On Brain Oedema

    Author : Mårten Jungner; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatic brain injury; brain oedema; fluid therapy; blood-brain barrier;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury and bacterial meningitis may at a glance appear as two different disease entities. The host reaction, however, to both trauma and infection involves a strong inflammatory response, with the classical symptomology of rubor, tumor, calor, dolor et functio laesa. READ MORE

  3. 3. Endogenous Retroviral RNA Expression in Humans

    Author : Lijuan Hu; Jonas Blomberg; Göran Friman; Francois Mallet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Microbiology; Human endogenous retrovirus HERV ; HERVE; HERVW; betaretrovirus; gammaretrovirus; RNA expression; real time PCR; endometrium; endometriosis; brain tissue; reproductive tissue; ovarian cancer; ovary; neuroblastoma cell line; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs) constitute about 8% of the human genome. There are around 4000 pol-containing retroviral integrations in the human genome, which makes it impractical to measure each of them separately. READ MORE

  4. 4. Quality systems to avoid secondary brain injury in neurointensive care

    Author : Lena Nyholm; Per Enblad; Camilla Fröjd; Anders Lewén; Bo-Michael Bellander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Traumatic brain injury; Subarachnoid hemorrhage; Intracranial pressure; Quality register; Checklist; Nursing interventions; Pressure autoregulation; Intracranial compliance; Hyperthermia; Cerebral energy metabolism; Microdialysis and Brain tissue oxygenation.; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Outcome after traumatic brain injury (TBI) depends on the extent of primary cell death and on the development of secondary brain injury. The general aim of this thesis was to find strategies and quality systems to minimize the extent of secondary insults in neurointensive care (NIC). READ MORE

  5. 5. The Neurological Wake-up Test in Neurocritical Care

    Author : Karin Skoglund; Niklas Marklund; Per Enblad; Tiit Mathiesen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Intracranial pressure; Cerebral perfusion pressure; Propofol sedation; Wake-up test; stress hormones; intracerebral microdialysis; brain tissue oxygenation; jugular venous oxygenation; Neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : The neurological wake-up test, NWT, is a clinical monitoring tool that can be used to evaluate the level of consciousness in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) during neurocritical care (NCC). Since patients with severe TBI or SAH are often treated with mechanical ventilation and sedation, the NWT requires that the continuous sedation is interrupted. READ MORE
