  1. 16. The human diving response : effects of temperature and training

    Author : Erika Schagatay; Lunds universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Djurfysiologi; pig; human; training; breath-holding time; breaking point; cold-receptors; arterial blood; vasoconstriction; bradycardia; diving reflex; diving response; Breath-hold diving; Animal physiology; simulated diving; Organism biology; Organismbiologi; Sports; Idrott; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The aim was to elucidate the cardiovascular response associated with breath-hold diving, especially the effects of temperature in its elicitation and the effects of different types of training on the human diving response (DR) and breath-holding time (BHT), and to evaluate the human DR in a mammalian perspective. A model for simulated diving by apnea and facial immersion in cold water was developed. READ MORE

  2. 17. Ventilation distribution in the lung periphery measured by inert gas washout : influence of increased gravity, anti-G suit pressure, body posture, and breathing pattern

    Author : Mikael Grönkvist; Göran Hedenstierna; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : acceleration; anti-G suit; body posture; cdi; dcdi; human centrifuge; He; hypergravuty; lung; multiple-breath washout; single-breath washout; SF 6; standing; supune; trapped gas; ventilation distribution; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The lung is highly sensitive to forces of gravity and acceleration, and to surrounding pressures. This thesis aimed to assess the effects on ventilation distribution in peripheral lung units when changing the direction or magnitude of the gravitational vector and when compressing the lower body half with an anti-G suit (AGS). 3. 18. Bad breath : prevalence, periodontal disease, microflora and inflammatory markers

    Author : Birgit Johansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Foetor ex ore; bad breath; halitophobia; oral hygiene; periodontal disease; periodontal pathogens and inflammatory markers;

    Abstract : Bad breath usually originates within the oral cavity and is believed to be associated with periodontal disease. The over all aim of the present thesis was to study periodontal conditions in subjects with bad breath as well as the prevalence of bad breath in subjects with periodontal disease. READ MORE

  4. 19. Cyanide in breath as a marker for cyanide poisoning

    Author : Kristin Stamyr; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Approximately 120 people die every year due to fires in Sweden. A majority of the fire victims die due to toxic fire gases. Carbon monoxide is often thought to be the major cause of death. Still, another very toxic fire gas, hydrogen cyanide, is formed when materials containing nitrogen burn, e. READ MORE

  5. 20. Integrating Biosensors for Air Monitoring and Breath-Based Diagnostics

    Author : Niklas Sandström; Wouter van der Wijngaart; Fredrik Nikolajeff; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The air we breathe is the concern of all of us but nevertheless we only know very little about airborne particles, and especially which biological microorganisms they contain. Today, we live in densely populated societies with a growing number of people, making us particularly vulnerable to air transmission of pathogens. READ MORE
