  1. 6. Statistical Modelling of Cell Cycle Dynamics Analysis and Interpretation of BrdUrd DNA FCM-Derived Data

    Author : Sara Larsson Lönn; Matematisk statistik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; G2 phase duration; DNA replication; flow cytometry; Natural science; Naturvetenskap; S phase duration; DNA distribution; branching processes; cell cycle kinetics;

    Abstract : It it of great importance to increase the knowledge of various cell cycle kinetic parameters and the objective of this thesis is to use stochastic models to interpret Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdUrd) DNA Flow Cytometry (FCM) derived data in order to estimate such parameters. The cell cycle is the process of growth and division that is essential for an organism to increase in size. READ MORE

  2. 7. Cell damage and tissue repair in the central nervous system : electron mi[c]roscopy study of neuronal death and cell replacement

    Author : Benita Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Ischemia; cell death; repair; stem cells; neurogenesis; EM; MRI;

    Abstract : The central nervous system is vulnerable to various insults and particularly to ischemia. To mimic ischemia, a photochemical or compression lesion was induced in the right sensory motor cortex of rat brains. READ MORE

  3. 8. Retroviral and related nucleic acid processing enzymes expression and detection : Applications on clinical studies of HIV and HERVs

    Author : Raymond Awad; Amnon Hizi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Reverse transcriptase; endogenous retrovirus; deoxycytidine kinase; HIV; HERVS; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medical Virology; medicinsk virologi;

    Abstract : Reverse transcriptase (RT), the expression and detection of the enzyme marking the family Retroviridae, has been studied. A new RT activity assay adapted to 96-well microtitre plates is described. It uses a non- radioactive bromodeoxyuridine triphosphate (BrdUTP) substrate in a solid phase format. The assay was highly sensitive. READ MORE

  4. 9. Inflammation and Cell Profileration Following Perinatal Brain Injury

    Author : Katarina Järlestedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hypoxia-ischemia; immature brain; reactive gliosis; complement system; C3a; fear conditioning; lipopolysaccharide; inflammation;

    Abstract : Inflammation plays an important role in cerebral ischemic injury in the immature brain. The aim of the thesis was to investigate (1) the role of astrocyte activation and reactive gliosis in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, (2) the role of complement derived peptide C3a in neonatal HI brain injury, (3) the effect of neonatal HI brain injury on fear learning and behaviour, (4) the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced systemic inflammation on cell proliferation in the developing brain. 5. 10. Differential effects of voluntary running on hippocampal plasticity in the adult rat brain

    Author : Andrew Stuart Naylor; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : exercise; hippocampus; stress; progenitor proliferation; neurogenesis; trophic factors; frontal cortex; spatial memory; rat; pCREB; endogenous opioids;

    Abstract : The continuation of neuronal birth from dividing neural stem cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus throughout adulthood is known to play an important role in maintaining normal hippocampal function, such as memory and learning. Negative alterations in the levels of adult neurogenesis have also been linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer s disease and mood disorders such as depression. READ MORE
