  1. 1. Gene expression in buccal keratinocytes with emphasis on carbonyl metabolism

    Author : Claudia A Staab; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : The inner lining of the cheek, the buccal mucosa, is a target for air-borne, dietary and tobacco usage-derived carcinogens, but also interesting from a drug delivery point of view. Cancer arising in the buccal epithelium, buccal squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC), often diagnosed at a late disease stage, is highly aggressive and recurrent, emphasizing the need for novel approaches in diagnosis and therapy. 2. 2. Modeling of multi-step oral carcinogenesis in vitro : Assessment of growth, differentiation and apoptosis markers

    Author : Annette Hansson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Organotypic cultures; apoptosis; terminal squamous differentiation; buccal mucosa; cytokeratins; carcinogenesis; p53;

    Abstract : Human oral mucosa, especially the buccal epithelium, is worldwide a common site for cancer. Cancer development frequently results in inactivation of tumor suppressor p53, a central regulator of growth and programmed cell death, and deregulated expression of structural elements like cytokeratins.     Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; age; dental plaque pH; dentures; gender; health; IgA; medication; minor salivary glands; oral dryness; saliva; salivary secretion rate;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this series of studies has been to examine palatal, buccal and labial minor salivary gland secretions in relation to age and gender and other factors and conditions that could have effects on the saliva. Abstract : Soft tissue integration is a prerequisite for implant success. The role of the soft tissue barrier at implants is to provide an effective seal that protects the underlying bone and prevents access for microorganisms and their products. READ MORE

  5. 5. On Caries Risk Profile and Prevention in an Adult Saudi Population

    Author : Helal Sonbul; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adults. Approximal caries. Bitewing. Caries risk. Cariogram. Dental restorations. Enamel caries. Fluoride toothpaste. Saudi Arabia.;

    Abstract : Objectives. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate: 1) the caries profile in an adult Saudi population with several dental restorations using a computer-based program (Cariogram), 2) the prevalence of primary and recurrent caries and of filled tooth surfaces in relation to the Cariogram outcome, expressed as “the chance of avoiding caries”, 3) the quality of dental restorations and the additional value of using bitewing radiographs, 4) the effect of a “modified fluoride toothpaste technique” on the incidence and progression of approximal caries diagnosed on bitewings and 5) the preventive effect of this toothpaste technique on buccal and lingual enamel caries and to determine the role of patient compliance.
