  1. 1. Standardization of Islet Isolation and Transplantation Variables

    Author : Andrew S Friberg; Olle Korsgren; Daniel Brandhorst; Paul R. V. Johnson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Islet isolation; standardization; enzyme; gradient separation; digital imaging analysis; DIA; transplantation outcome; islet transplantation; prediction; Medical technology; Medicinsk teknik; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Computerized Image Processing; Datoriserad bildbehandling;

    Abstract : Currently, the transplantation of islets of Langerhans is a viable means to maintain control of blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of hypoglycemia in defined populations with brittle type I diabetes mellitus or those requiring pancreatectomy. However, the process of islet isolation is highly variable and not all isolations result in islet numbers or quality suitable for transplantation. READ MORE

  2. 2. Gene x lifestyle interactions in type 2 diabetes mellitus and related traits

    Author : Ema C Brito; Paul Franks; Aline Meirhaeghe; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gene x environment interaction; gene x lifestyle interaction; physical activity; type 2 diabetes; European Youth Heart Study; Malmö Preventive Project; Prevalence and Prediction and Prevention of Diabetes in Botnia; PPARGC1A; CDKN2A B; HNF1B; TCF7L2; FTO; Epidemiology; Epidemiologi; epidemiologi; Epidemiology; genetik; Genetics;

    Abstract :   Background: Type 2 diabetes is thought to result from interactions between genetic and lifestyle factors, but few robust examples exist. The overarching aim of this thesis was to discover such interactions by studying cohorts of white youth and adults from northern Europe in which physical activity, genotypes, and diabetes-related traits or diabetes incidence had been ascertained. Abstract : Factors affecting the total chloride threshold for initiation of pitting corrosion in reinforced concrete were investigated by means of field and laboratory exposure tests. Factors affecting the chloride penetration into concrete were also investigated by means of field tests. The thesis consists of a summary (86 p.) and 11 papers attached. READ MORE
