1. Ecosystems in the Anthropocene: the role of cropland management for carbon and nitrogen cycle processes
Abstract : Through deforestation and conversion of natural ecosystems to croplands and pastures, have humans released vast amounts of carbon (C) dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Roughly one third of the cumulative anthropogenic emissions until today stem from these practices, the remainder being mostly due to fossil fuel combustion. READ MORE

2. Proteoglycan Lectin Domain Interactions in Extracellular Matrix Assembly
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the C-terminal G3 region of the large aggregating proteoglycans that are found in complex with hyaluronan in the extracellular matrix. The G3 region contains a C-type lectin domain that binds different extracellular matrix proteins playing an integral role in tissue organization during development and remodeling. READ MORE

3. Scanning Probe Microscopy: Design and Applications
Abstract : A compact scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and a scanning ion-conductance microscope (SICM) has been constructed. The concentric microscope head was built around a commercial piezoelectric inchworm motor that was used for coarse positioning. The microscope has a high resonance frequency (9.6 kHz), low noise (0. 4. Fundamentals of Wetting and Mechanical Durability of Superhydrophobic Coatings
Abstract : In paper I the friction between three different superhydrophobic surfaces and water drops were investigated using high‑speed video. The surfaces were two based on a hydrophobic wax and the third was the leaf of a Lotus (Nelumbo Nucifera). The acceleration of water drops was measured as a function of drop size and surface inclination. READ MORE
