1. Wetting and Capillary Flow of Surfactant Solutions and Inks
Abstract : This thesis presents results of a series of experimental studies on the spreading dynamics of small drops of complex solutions on solid surfaces. The capillary flow dynamics of complex solutions have also been investigated. READ MORE

2. Enantioselective Binding of Designed Propranolol Analogues to the Cellobiohydrolase Cel7A
Abstract : This thesis describes the affinity and enantiomeric selectivity of the cellobiohydrolase Cel7A (isolated from Hypocrea jercorina). The chiral recognition of the enzyme has been studied with respect to amino alcohols and new ligands have been designed, based on the structure of the common ?-blocker propranolol. READ MORE

3. Improved techniques for CE-MALDI-MS off-line coupling and MALDI-MS analysis of primarily hydrophobic proteins and peptides
Abstract : Due to the hydrophobic nature of integral membrane proteins (IMP) they give rise to several difficulties concerning handling and analysis, which is not the case for the most water soluble proteins. New analysis methods are needed, where the insolubility problems of the hydrophobic proteins due to aggregation and adhesion are tackled. READ MORE

4. The behaviour of mica-rich aggregates under the temperate climate conditions
Abstract : In regions of temperate climate the destructive influence of frost action such as frost heave in winter and thaw weakening in spring are the main contributors to severe deterioration of the pavement structure. A number of studies on construction aggregates and field observations of road failures, especially caused by seasonal fluctuations of temperature, have revealed a negative influence of unbound mica-rich rock aggregates on the service life of road construction. 5. Atmospheric pressure ionisation interface considerations for micro column separation with mass spectrometric detection
Abstract : Two miniaturised atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) interfaces were developed for micro column separation and their performances were investigated in high temperature open tubular column liquid chromatography and capillary supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC). The most influential parameters, for example, the interface probe position relative to the sampling orifice and the reagent ion plasma composition, were investigated to optimise the ion current signal and stability.
