  1. 1. Staphylococci in cardio-thoracic surgery : Epidemiological and clinical studies

    Author : Ann Tammelin-Brandemark; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; Coagulase negative staphylococci; Staphylococcus aureus; MRSE; carriage; dispersal; air counts; scrub suit; PFGE; mediastinitis; sternal dehiscence; diagnosis.; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Bacteriology; klinisk bakteriologi;

    Abstract : Mediastinitis complicating cardio-thoracic surgery causes suffering to the patient and huge costs to the society. It is often caused by methicillin resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) and S. aureus. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hemostatic function and inflammatory activation after weaning from cardio pulmonary bypass

    Author : Anki Olsson; Sören Berg; Joakim Alfredsson; Rolf Svedjeholm; Erik Håkansson; Tomas Gudbjartsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) contributes to perioperative platelet dysfunction, increased fibrinolysis and impaired coagulation, which can have an impact on postoperative bleeding. During CPB the blood is exposed to foreign surfaces leading to activation of the coagulation system and a systemic inflammatory response with complement and leukocyte activation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Influence of fruit, meal distribution and dental health on cardio-metabolic risk

    Author : Edvin Ström; Fredrik H Nyström; Magnus Wijkman; Anders Gustafsson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Background   Fruit is often recommended as a snack between meals and a main component of the cardioprotective Mediterranean diet. The sugar content might be of concern since it theoretically could lead to hepatic fat accumulation and affect dental status negatively. READ MORE

  4. 4. RAS-MAPK syndromes - a Clinical and Molecular Investigation

    Author : Anna-Maja Nyström; Marie-Louise Bondeson; Göran Annerén; Anna Wedell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; RAS-MAPK syndromes; Noonan syndrome; Neurofibromatosis type I; cardio-facio-cutaneous syndrome; mutation; multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification; gene; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; Klinisk genetik; Clinical Genetics;

    Abstract : The RAS-MAPK syndromes are a group of clinically and genetically related disorders, characterized by cardiac defects, facial dysmorphism, cutaneous abnormalities and neurocognitive impairment. The pathogenesis is dysregulation of the RAS-MAPK pathway, and several genes within the pathway are involved. READ MORE

  5. 5. On certain genetic and metabolic risk factors for carotid stenosis and stroke

    Author : Pär Wanby; Lars Brudin; Martin Carlsson; Milita Crisby; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carotid artery diseases; Carrier proteins; genetics; Cerebrovascular accident; Cerebrovascular disorders; Genetic predisposition to disease; Polymorphism; genetic; Medicine; Medicin; Medicin;

    Abstract : The present study evaluated genetic and metabolic factors influencing the risk of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and internal carotid artery stenosis (ICA stenosis) in a Swedish community. The threonine (T) containing protein of the FABP2 A54T gene polymorphism has a greater affinity for long chain fatty acids (FFAs) than the alanine (A) containing protein. READ MORE
