1. HIV-1 patient assessment and treatment : from multitest to co-receptor (CCR5) gene polymorphism : from Rgp160 immunization to highly active antiretroviral treatment (HAART)
Abstract : During the last 15 years, understanding of the pathogenesis of HIV- 1 infection and AIDS has developed rapidly. From a mysterious plague-like untreatable disease with unknown cause and transmission route to a well characterized, chronic, manageable, if yet not curable, retroviral infection. READ MORE

2. Viral parameters influencing clinical long-term non progression in HIV-1 infected subjects
Abstract : A very small portion of the HIV-1 infected population is constituted by individuals, called long- term non progressors (LTNP), in whom after even a decade or more, no visible deterioration of the immune system is recognized and the infection remains therefore asymptomatic. The reasons for such "natural" prolonged well-being can be attributed to both the virus and the infected host and their understanding is likely to give important information for the development of an effective HIV- vaccine and for immune reconstitution therapy. 3. Genetic and immunological control of human myasthenia gravis
Abstract : Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a classical autoimmune disease characterized by muscle weakness due to an immune attack against the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) on the post-synaptic membrane of the neuromuscular junction. Because of the involvement of multiple factors in the disease, the overall aims of this thesis were to uncover the regulation of candidate genes and the possible cellular mechanisms involved in the immuno-regulation of human MG. 4. Immune recognition and early virus-cell interactions. Glycobiological aspects on HIV-1 gp120
Abstract : Human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2) are the etiological agents of AIDS in humans. The viral envelope glycoproteins gp120 and gp41 mediate the early virus-cell interaction of HIV with the target cells. READ MORE

5. Ageing and inflammation with focus on end-stage renal diseases : genetic and epigenetic factors
Abstract : The presence of ageing-associated disorders at a relatively young age in patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) has led to the hypothesis that CKD is characterized by accelerated ageing, resulting in a marked discrepancy between chronological and biological age. Factors that accelerate biological ageing, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and toxins, impact the processes of cellular senescence and/or apoptosis, thereby shortening the life span of cells, and consequently, of the organism as a whole.
