  1. 1. CD1d restricted NKT cells in regulation of pathogenic autoimmunity

    Author : Anna Teige; Neurokirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Autoimmunity; NKT cells; CD1d antigen presentation; Multiple sclerosis; Rheumatoid arthritis;

    Abstract : Human autoimmune diseases such as reumatoid arthritis (RA) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are believed to develop when self-tolerance mechanisms are failing, with a chronic destructive inflammation as result. To experimentally study autoimmunity, we have used murine models that mimic their human counterparts; experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) – a model for MS, and collagen induced arthritis (CIA) and antigen induced arthritis (AIA) – models for RA. 2. 2. Processing and presentation of exogenous antigen by dendritic cells

    Author : Liying Chen; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : DC; vesicular MHC-I processing; Adenosine; CD 1 d; TACA;

    Abstract : Dendritic cells (DC) play a key role in the immune system. In this thesis, we have investigated and characterized pathways for the processing and presentation of exogenous OVA on MHC-I ("cross-presentation") and how these were influenced by the purine nucleoside Adenosine (Ado), an immune regulator that accumulates to high concentrations at sites of inflammation and tumor growth. 3. 3. Invariant NKT cells and CD1d in HIV-1 infection

    Author : Sofia Andersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The invariant natural killer T (iNKT) cells are a subset of T lymphocytes that share characteristics of both innate and adaptive immunity. These cells are defined as T cells restricted by the lipid antigen presenting molecule CD1d and express an invariant T cell receptor (TCR) as well as classical natural killer (NK) cell markers. 4. 4. Protective Immunity in Atherosclerosis

    Author : Maria Wigren; Kardiovaskulär forskning - immunitet och ateroskleros; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; AtherosclerosisVaccineInflammationT cellsregulatory T cells;

    Abstract : The immune system is a promising target for novel therapies that are aiming at reducing cardiovascular diseases. Autoimmune responses against modified low density lipoprotein (LDL) are believed to promote development of atherosclerosis. Proinflammatory immune responses can be counterbalanced by immunosuppressive regulatory T cells (Tregs). READ MORE

  5. 5. A virologist’s guide to hide and seek : evasion of innate immunity by primate lentiviruses

    Author : Susanna M Bächle; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : HIV is the cause of a chronic, incurable infection in 37 million people worldwide in 2014. This thesis investigates how the immune system detects HIV and how in turn HIV avoids detection by the immune system. READ MORE
