  1. 1. The Immune System in the Oldest-Old : Clinical and Immunological Studies in the NONA Immune Cohort

    Author : Bengt-Olof Nilsson; Jan Ernerudh; Anders Wikby; Sture Löfgren; Karlis Pauksens; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : Elderly; selection; health status; lymphocyte subsets; CD8; CMV; cytomegalovirus; immune risk; immune risk phenotype; IRP; T-cells; interleukin 6; IL-6; survival; mortality; antinuclear antibodies; ANA; ageing; immunosenescence; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The oldest-old (people aged 80 or older) constituted 5 % of the population in Sweden in 2000, an increase from 1.5 % fifty years earlier. The immune system undergoes dramatic changes at high age, sometimes referred to as “immunosenescence”. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Role of Zinc in Leishmaniasis and Tuberculosis

    Author : Miguel Guzman; Tillämpad biokemi; []
    Keywords : Cutaneous leishmaniasis; tuberculosis; zinc supplementation; lymphocytes; cell proliferation; INF-γ; CD4 CD8 ratio;

    Abstract : The synergistic relation between nutritional deficiency and infection may have negative effects on the immune system, making individuals more vulnerable to infection. Zinc can affect the resistance to infections by modulating cytokine release, and by acting as a cofactor of thymulin, which induces the differentiation of immature T lymphocytes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulatory CD4+FOXP3+ T cells in Helicobacter pylori-induced disease

    Author : Bert Kindlund; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Regulatory T cells; Helicobacter pylori; duodenal ulcer; gastric cancer; FOXP3;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori colonize the gastric or duodenal mucosa of approximately half of the worlds’ population. Although most individuals are asymptomatic, H. pylori infection cause peptic ulcers or gastric cancer in 10-15 % and 1-2 %, respectively, of the infected individuals. READ MORE

    Abstract : This work was aimed at improving our understanding of the course of primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS). The Malmö SS patient register and the 2002 American-European Consensus Criteria formed the basis of all studies. Helicobacter pylori (H. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sarcoidosis : inflammatory mechanisms and markers of activity

    Author : Anders Planck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Sarcoidosis; HLA class II; T-lymphocytes; CD4-CD8 ratio; T cell receptor; angiotensin-converting enzyme; apoptosis;

    Abstract : Sarcoidosis is a disease characterized by an accumulation of CD4+ T-lymphocytes in affected organs. Previous findings of an association between the HLA-allele DR17 and an accumulation in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of CD4+ T-lymphocytes expressing the T-cell receptor (TCR) V gene segment AV2S3, is in line with an aetiological hypothesis claiming that sarcoidosis is elicited by a specific antigen(s) in genetically predisposed individuals.
