  2. 12. Respiratory effects of particulate matter air pollution : studies on diesel exhaust, road tunnel, subway and wood smoke exposure in human subjects

    Author : Maria Sehlstedt; Sandström Thomas; Jamshid Pourazar; Anders Bucht; Steffen Loft; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Airway inflammation; antioxidant; bronchoscopy; detoxification; immunohistochemistry; particulate matter; Environmental medicine; Miljömedicin;

    Abstract : Background: Ambient air pollution is associated with adverse health effects, but the sources and components, which cause these effects is still incompletely understood. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the pulmonary effects of a variety of common air pollutants, including diesel exhaust, biomass smoke, and road tunnel and subway station environments. 4. 14. Studies in sporadic inclusion body myositis

    Author : Snjólaug Arnardóttir; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : s-IBM; muscle fibre regeneration; cytoskeleton; IVIg; muscle inflammtion; cytokine; training; sensibility; neuropathy ;

    Abstract : Aims: The general aims of the present study were to increase the understanding of the disease process in s-lBM by analysing the cytoskeletal structure in muscle fibres and their regeneration potential; and also to evaluate sensory function in patients with s-IBM to test the hypothesis of an associated neurogenic component or a concomitant neuropathy in s-IBM; and to evaluate therapeutic options by analysing the effect of IVIg treatment on the muscle inflammation; and to evaluate the effect of training on muscle function and muscle inflammation. Patients: Twenty-six patients with the diagnosis of s41BM participated in these studies. READ MORE

  5. 15. Biological importance of cytomegalovirus infection in health and disease : profound effects of infection on monocyte and smooth muscle cell function

    Abstract : Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a herpesvirus. Following a primary infection, HCMV persists in the body in a latent form and most adults are virus carriers. Infection and reactivation of HCMV occur in inummocompromised patients causing severe disease and appear to be the result of inflammatory processes. READ MORE
