  1. 1. Simulations of Simple Fluids and Surface Forces

    Author : Martin Trulsson; Beräkningskemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular modeling; Surface Forces; Dielectric Constant; Charge Capacitance; Charge Regulation; Hypersphere; Statistical mechanics; Intermolecular interactions; Col- loidal Stability; Simulations; Fluids;

    Abstract : A considerable part of all chemistry in nature and in industry occurs in solvents. Sol- vents affect both the interactions and the reactions of the particles immersed in them. The work in this thesis concerns the properties of ionic and polar solvents, as well as the interactions between solutes and/or dispersed particles. READ MORE

  2. 2. Phase transitions in novel superfluids and systems with correlated disorder

    Author : Hannes Meier; Mats Wallin; Asle Sudbø; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; condensed matter physics; phase transitions; critical phenomena; spin models; quantum phase transitions; quantum fluids; superfluidity; superconductivity; disordered systems; Bose glass; dirty bosons; vortex pinning; statistical mechanics; Monte Carlo simulation; Wolff algorithm; classical worm algorithm; Wang-Landau algorithm; Fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Condensed matter systems undergoing phase transitions rarely allow exact solutions. The presence of disorder renders the situation  even worse but collective Monte Carlo methods and parallel algorithms allow numerical descriptions. READ MORE

  3. 3. Expression and role of the cytokine tyrosine kinase receptor flt3 in early hematopoiesis

    Author : Jörgen Adolfsson; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematologi; extracellulära vätskor; extracellular fluids; Haematology; flt3; cytokine; Hematopoiesis; stem cells;

    Abstract : Mature blood cells are crucial for life, but they have a short lifetime and thus have to be replaced. These mature blood cells are produced by lineage restricted progenitors, which themselves are generated by rare multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in a highly dynamic process called hematopoiesis. 4. 4. To be or not to be, unraveling molecular mechanisms for lineage decisions in developing blood cells

    Author : Robert Månsson; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hematologi; extracellular fluids; Haematology; common lymphoid precursor CLP ; early B-cell factor 1 EBF1 ; B-cell; Stemcell; hematopoiesis; extracellulära vätskor; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : All hematopoietic cells originate from hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) residing in the BM. The process of differentiation, through which HSCs generate progenitors and subsequently mature blood cells has been extensively studied but many of the regulatory mechanisms involved remains elusive. 5. 5. Interfacial properties of calcium montmorillonite in aqueous solutions : Density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics studies on the electric double layer

    Author : Guomin Yang; Göran Lindbergh; Ivars Neretnieks; Michael Holmboe; Jan Forsman; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Clay minerals; Bentonite; density functional theory; molecular dynamics; GROMACS; electric double layer; electrolytes; ionic liquids; primitive model; CLAYFF forcefield.; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The swelling properties of Bentonite are highly affected by clay content and the clay-water interactions that arise from the ion distribution in the diffuse double layer formed near the charged montmorillonite (or smectite) surfaces. Existing continuum models describing the electric double layers, such as classical Poisson-Boltzmann and DLVO theory, ignore the ion-ion correlations, which are especially important for multivalent ions at high surface charge and ionic strength.
