  1. 1. Shedding light on retinal. A contribution to the understanding of the primary process of vision

    Author : Fredrik Blomgren; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; retinal; rhodopsin; quantum mechanics molecular mechanics; calculations; ab initio;

    Abstract : In our eyes light is absorbed by a polyene molecule called retinal. This molecule contains six double bonds and is bonded to a protein. The protein-chromophore complex is called rhodopsin and has been structurally determined by crystallography. It was early suggested that the main event in vision is a cis-trans isomerization of retinal. READ MORE

  2. 2. Constraint-based modeling of metabolism - interpreting predictions of growth and ATP synthesis in human and yeast

    Author : Avlant Nilsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; the Crabtree effect; enzyme-constraints; stunting; cellular economy; the Warburg effect; uncoupling; tumor; flux balance analysis; lactate threshold; metabolite depletion;

    Abstract : Growth is the primary objective of the cell. Diseases arise when cells diverge from a healthy growth-pattern. An increased understanding of cellular growth may thus be translated into improved human health. The cell requires materials and free energy (in the form of ATP) in order to grow, metabolism supplies the cell with this. READ MORE

  3. 3. Biophysical studies on aggregation processes and amyloid fibrils with focus on Alzheimer's disease

    Author : Niklas Bark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy; amyloid fibril formation; Alzheimer s disease;

    Abstract : Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease, and is the most common form of dementia, affecting 1-2% of the population in industrialized countries. It is believed that intermediate species formed during amyloid Bpeptide (AB) polymerization play a key role in the pathogenesis of AD, but it is not known how such toxic effects are exerted. 4. 4. Biophysical studies of protein folding upon interaction with molecular chaperones

    Author : Satish Babu Moparthi; Uno Carlsson; Per Hammarström; Bengt-Harald Jonsson; Pernilla Wittung‐Stafshede; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Proteins are biological macromolecules that serve all functions in cells. Every protein consists of a sequence of amino acids that is folded into a three‐dimensional structure to maintain the unique information it contains and to allow the protein to perform its specific actions.
