1. On the role of penicillin-binding protein SpoVD in endospore cortex assembly
Abstract : Bacteria of the genera Bacillus and Clostridium can form endospores as a strategy to survive unfavourable environmental conditions. Endospore formation involves synthesis of cortex, a thick layer of modified peptidoglycan that surrounds the spore. READ MORE

2. Towards Cortex Isomorphic Attractor Neural Networks
Abstract : In this thesis we model the mammalian cerebral cortex withattractor neural networks and study the parallelimplementations of these models. First, we review the size, structure, and scaling laws ofthe cerebral cortex of five mammals; mouse, rat, cat, macaque, and human. READ MORE

3. Untangling Cortico-Striatal Circuitry and its Role in Health and Disease - A computational investigation
Abstract : The basal ganglia (BG) play a critical role in a variety of regular motor and cognitive functions. Many brain diseases, such as Parkinson’s diseases, Huntington’s disease and dyskinesia, are directly related to malfunctions of the BG nuclei. READ MORE

4. Segmentation and Visualisation of Human Brain Structures
Abstract : In this thesis the focus is mainly on the development of segmentation techniques for human brain structures and of the visualisation of such structures. The images of the brain are both anatomical images (magnet resonance imaging (MRI) and autoradigraphy) and functional images that show blood flow (functional magnetic imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and single photon emission tomograpy (SPECT)). 5. Generation of cortical neurons through reprogramming technology
Abstract : The human cortex is affected by several debilitating acute and chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease, which target specific types of cortical neurons. Emerging evidence indicates that stem cells and reprogrammed cells can be used to generate human cortical neurons both for cell replacement by transplantation, and for disease modeling and drug screening.
