1. Cannabinoids as neuroprotective agents : a mechanistic study
Abstract : Glucose and oxygen supply to the brain is critical for its proper function and when it is restricted as during a stroke, neurons and glial cells quickly become necrotic leading to structural damage as well as functional impairment and even death. To date there are few effective therapies that inhibit the neurodegenerative process and improves the outcome for the affected individual. READ MORE

2. Synthesis of estradiol mimetics and potential anti-Alzheimer’s agents
Abstract : This thesis is composed of two projects, both involving synthesis aimed at drug discovery. The first project covers method development for the synthesis of substances that can be used in estrogen replacement therapy. READ MORE

3. Palladium-Catalysed Couplings in Organic Synthesis : Exploring Catalyst-Presenting Strategies and Medicinal Chemistry Applications
Abstract : Palladium-catalysed coupling reactions have been embraced by synthetic chemists as one of the preferred means for smooth formation of new carbon-carbon bonds: a truly ubiquitous methodology of synthesizing complex molecules. This thesis describes the study of a series of palladium(0)-catalysed C2-arylations of a 1-cyclopentenyl ether, equipped with a chiral (S)-N-methyl-pyrrolidine auxiliary. 4. Synthesis of substituted Ring-Fused 2-Pyridones and applications in chemical biology
Abstract : Antibiotics have been extensively used to treat bacterial infections since Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin 1928. Disease causing microbes that have become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy are an increasing public health problem. READ MORE

5. Methods for Asymmetric Olefination Reactions; Development and Application to Natural Product Synthesis
Abstract : This thesis deals with the development and application of methods for asymmetric olefinations, in particular Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reactions, in the synthesis of certain natural products. Relying on asymmetric HWE reactions to access key building blocks, two natu-ral products, pyranicin and pyragonicin, were synthesized from common late intermediates. READ MORE
