  1. 16. The role of ABC transporters and inflammation in drug-resistant epilepsy

    Author : Lora Deuitch Weidner; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis explores two pathologies thought to be related to drug resistance in epilepsy that may themselves be causally related: 1) overexpression of drug transporters in capillaries and 2) inflammation. With regard to the first hypothesis, overexpression of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP), at the blood-brain barrier are thought to contribute to drug resistance in epilepsy. 2. 17. Endocannabinoid metabolism : the impact of inflammatory factors and pharmacological inhibitors

    Author : Jessica Karlsson; Christopher Fowler; Stig Jacobsson; Jürg Gertsch; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; endocannabinoid; anandamide; 2-AG; fatty acid amide hydrolase; cyclooxygenase-2; prostate cancer; catabolism; inflammation; inflammatory factors;

    Abstract : The endocannabinoid (eCB) system is an endogenous signaling system consisting of ligands (referred to as endocannabinoids, eCBs), receptors and metabolic enzymes. The eCB system is involved in homeostatic control of a variety of biological functions such as neuronal signaling, mood, appetite and pathological conditions such as pain, inflammation and tumour progression. 3. 18. Nitric Oxide Regulation during Anti-tumor Immunotherapy

    Author : Wiaam Badn; Neurokirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Immunologi; serology; Immunology; Medicin människa och djur ; immunotherapy; Medicine human and vertebrates ; immunosuppression; PGE2; Nitric oxide; serologi;

    Abstract : During tumor progression a strong immunosuppression is developed and is believed to be the major reason why immunotherapy fails. This suppression is induced in response to factors produced from tumor cells, but can also be induced after immunotherapy. READ MORE

  4. 19. Clinical studies on the role of eicosanoids in the asthmatic airway inflammation

    Author : Kameran Daham; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The underlying mechanisms in the asthmatic airway inflammation involve the interaction between different cells and mediators that consequently result in different clinical phenotypes. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the impact of inflammatory mediators, with emphasis on eicosanoids, on the inflammatory and functional airway responses under basal and triggered conditions in subjects with asthma, in particular ASA/NSAID-intolerant and allergic phenotypes. 5. 20. Inhibition of mPGES-1 as therapeutic strategy in inflammation and cancer

    Author : Filip Bergqvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is an inflammatory and oncogenic lipid mediator. It is mainly formed via metabolism of arachidonic acid by cyclooxygenases (COX-1 and COX-2) and the terminal enzyme microsomal prostaglandin E synthase-1 (mPGES-1). READ MORE
