  1. 11. CRISPR/Cas9-based therapies and the role of astrocytes in Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease

    Author : Evangelos Konstantinidis; Martin Ingelsson; Anna Erlandsson; Vilmantas Giedraitis; Magnus Essand; Harald Steiner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer s disease; Parkinson s disease; gene editing; CRISPR Cas9; amyloid-beta; astrocytes; neurons; iPSCs; electrophysiology;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are the two most common neurodegenerative disorders. Whereas the AD brain features plaques of amyloid-beta (Aβ) and neurofibrillary tangles of tau, the PD brain is characterized by Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites containing α-synuclein (αSyn). READ MORE

  2. 12. Small RNAs, Big Consequences : Post-transcriptional Regulation and Adaptive Immunity in Bacteria

    Author : Mirthe Hoekzema; Gerhart E. H. Wagner; Magnus Lundgren; Kai Papenfort; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; small RNA; sRNA; non-coding RNA; Hfq; gene regulation; post-transcriptional regulation; biofilm; OmrA; OmrB; toxin-antitoxin; TisB; IstR-1; Persisters; CRISPR-Cas; CRISPR-Cas adaptation reporter; Escherichia coli; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology;

    Abstract : It is nowadays widely accepted that non-coding RNAs play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation of genes in all kingdoms of life. In bacteria, the largest group of RNA regulators are the small RNAs (sRNAs). READ MORE

  3. 13. Exploring early development and regenerative medicine using CRISPR/Cas9

    Author : Nerges Winblad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : With their intrinsic capacity to self-renew and their potential to differentiate to specialized tissues, human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) have many applications in the fields of cell therapy and developmental biology. By applying clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) genome engineering on selected genes in hESCs, we are able to create cells with desired characteristics. 4. 14. From GWAS to gene : Zebrafish as a model system for large-scale studies of obesity and comorbidities

    Author : Eugenia Mazzaferro; Marcel den Hoed; Randall Peterson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; zebrafish; genetic screens; gene editing; CRISPR Cas9; obesity; Medicinsk genetik; Medical Genetics;

    Abstract : Obesity increases the risk of developing comorbidities such as cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. However, not all obese individuals develop comorbidities, and those that do not are referred to as “metabolically healthy obesity” individuals. READ MORE

  5. 15. Genetic studies of zebrafish muscles : clues to protection in muscle disease

    Author : Nils Dennhag; Fatima Pedrosa Domellöf; Jonas von Hofsten; Tatjana Haitina; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Muscular dystrophies (MDs) are caused by dysregulation of over 40 proteins but commonly share features of muscle weakness, myofiber death and regeneration, loss of ambulation and premature death. A MD involves a broken link anywhere in the connection from extracellular matrix through the sarcolemma to the sarcomere. READ MORE
