    Abstract : The subject of this thesis was to study two intestinal barriers to oral drug bioavailability, drug efflux proteins of the ABC-transporter family, and in particular ABCB1/P-glycoprotein (Pgp), and the drug metabolizing enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4. At the onset of this thesis, similarities between CYP3A4 and Pgp in terms of their tissue distribution and gene regulation, along with overlapping substrate specificities, had generated the hypothesis that CYP3A4 and Pgp may have a complementary function and thus form a coordinated intestinal barrier to drug absorption and gut wall metabolism. 3. 3. Pharmacogenetics of human cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) enzymes

    Author : Anna Westlind Johnsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) subfamily encompasses the most important CYP enzymes with respect to drug metabolism, in particular CYP3A4. responsible for the metabolism of a majority of drugs being metabolized in order to be excreted. READ MORE

    Author : Helena Bergström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Sex and gender differences in the pharmacokinetics-and dynamics of drugs, have been known for centuries. Women have been regarded as different - a 70 kg male has been the norm in medicine. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies on 4b-hydroxycholesterol, a marker of CYP3A activity, and its association with 25-hydroxyvitamin D

    Author : Hanna Nylén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cholesterol is a vital compound that can undergo cytochrome P450 (CYP) mediated conversion into steroid hormones, bile acids and oxysterols. CYP enzymes are present in all human tissues and mediate the metabolism of several endogenous and exogenous compounds such as steroids and drugs. READ MORE
