  1. 6. Use of primary human hepatocytes for the elucidation of bile acid synthesis

    Author : Ewa C S Ellis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In the present investigation we cultured primary human hepatocytes on matrigel under serum-free conditions and studied bile acid formation. The following observations were made: · The major steroid products excreted from primary human hepatocytes into the culture medium were cholic acid, CA (70%) and chenodeoxycholic acid, CDCA (25%) conjugated with glycine or taurine. 2. 7. Cholesterol-lowering and anti-atherogenic effects of oats in mice

    Author : Kristina E Andersson; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cholesterol; Inflammation; Bile acids; Atherosclerosis; Oats; Beta-glucans;

    Abstract : The cholesterol-lowering effect of oats is well established, but the crucial properties eliciting this effect need to be further investigated to optimize the use of oats as functional foods. Furthermore, there are almost no reports investigating the effect of oats on atherosclerosis development. READ MORE

  3. 8. Studies of sterol 12alpha-hydroxylase (CYP8B1) : distribution and role for cholesterol homeostasis and gallstone formation

    Author : Jin Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : CYP8B1; CY7P7A1; bile acid; cholesterol homeostasis; gallstone; nuclear receptor; cellular distribution; cholesterol hypersecretion; ABCG5 G8; SREBP2; cholesterol absorption; diabetes mellitus; anti-atherogenesis;

    Abstract : Bile acids are essential physiological molecules which carry out multiple functions such as facilitating the absorption of dietary lipids and regulating the metabolism of cholesterol and bile acids. The formation of bile represents the major route for elimination of excess cholesterol, either by conversion of cholesterol into bile acids or excretion of intact cholesterol in mixed micelles. 4. 9. Studies on the molecular regulation of bile acids and lipoproteins in human liver

    Author : Lisa-Mari Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Elevated lipid levels in the bloodstream, in particular high levels of LDL cholesterol, are a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. The liver has a central role in cholesterol metabolism and is the only organ capable of a quantitative elimination of cholesterol from the body. READ MORE

  5. 10. Studies on cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in relation to plasma lipoproteins

    Author : Beatrice Sjöberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The metabolism of cholesterol and bile acids is tightly controlled but only partially characterized. The liver is responsible for most of the clearance and catabolism of plasma cholesterol, and the hepatocyte expression of LDL receptors is central in this process. READ MORE
