6. Intestinal Permeability and Presystemic Extraction of Fexofenadine and R/S-verapamil
Abstract : The main objective of this thesis was to investigate the in vivo relevance of membrane transporters and cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A4-mediated metabolism in the intestine and liver for the bioavailability of drugs in humans after oral administration. In the first part of the thesis, the main transport mechanisms involved in the intestinal absorption and bioavailability were investigated for fexofenadine, a minimally metabolized drug, which is a substrate for P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and members of organic anion transporting polypeptide (OATP) family. 7. Magnetomotive ultrasound for nanomedicine : a mechanistic approach to detection, evaluation and safety assessment
Abstract : Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, but reliable diagnosis and staging can contribute to optimal treatment planning, and is a crucial factor in reducing mortality and maintaining quality of life. Soft tissue mechanical properties are promising indicators of cancer that can be assessed non-invasively using functional imaging. READ MORE

8. Factors Influencing Iron Dialyzability and Uptake in In Vitro Models
Abstract : The availability or iron from a meal is influenced by numerous factors. This thesis deals with three of them: organic acids, plant proteins (pea and soy), and transit time through the stomach and small intestine. READ MORE

9. Provitamin A Carotenoids in Orange-Fleshed Sweet Potato
Abstract : Vitamin A deficiency is a major nutritional disorder in a large number of developing countries. The disorder is mainly caused by an inadequate intake of preformed vitamin A and provitamin A carotenoids from the diet. It is also recognized that vitamin A deficiency and iron deficiency tend to coexist in many population groups. READ MORE

10. Gliadin-Blocking Peptides In vitro assessment of their potential to alleviate celiac disease development
Abstract : This thesis work aimed to investigate the potential of synthetic peptides as agents to block wheat prolamins (gliadins) that trigger the development of symptoms in celiac disease. The first step of this investigation included selection and synthesis of peptides with high affinity to gliadins and assessment of the potential of these so-called blocking peptides to limit gliadin reactivity in vitro.
