  2. 17. Studies on the influence of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on neuropeptide release in the saliva

    Author : Irena Dawidson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : acupuncture; substance P; neurokinin A; calcitonin gene-related peptide; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; neuropeptide Y; xerostomia; salivary secretion rates;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to elucidate the mechanisms behind the effect of sensory stimulation (acupuncture) on the salivary flow rates of xerostomic patients. We hypothesised that the sensory stimulation activates the sensory and autonomic nervous systems, leading to an increased release of neuropeptides that influence salivary secretion in co-operation with or/and beside the classical neurotransmitters. 3. 18. Renal dysfunction and protection in cardiovascular surgery

    Author : Anders Bergman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acute Renal Failure; Anesthesia; Atrial Natriuretic Peptide; Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide; Calcium Antagonists; Diltiazem; Heart Surgery; Postoperative Renal Dysfunction; Vascular Surgery;

    Abstract : Purpose: This thesis is focused on studies of postoperative renal dysfunction (PRD), and on renal effects and possible prophylactic potentials of three vasoactive substances, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and the calcium channel antagonist diltiazem. Methods: In paper I the medical records of 1 030 consecutive cardiothoracic surgery patients were evaluated and glomerular filtration calculated from serum creatinine levels. READ MORE

  4. 19. The effects of neurotrophic substances on primary sensory neurons following peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Petri Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : DRG; dorsal horn; NGF; BDNF; NT-3; substance P; calcitonin gene-related peptide; fluoride-resistant acid phosphatase; carbonic anhydrase; microglia; astroglia;

    Abstract : Sensory impulses from the periphery is transmitted by primary sensory neurons located in dorsal root and cranial nerve ganglia. The primary sensory neurons are phenotypically diverse with regard to their expression of various chemical components. READ MORE

  5. 20. Surgical trauma, inflammation and tissue injury

    Author : Leif Törkvist; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Activated partial thromboplastin time; blood flow; blood pressure; CD18; calcitonin gene-related peptide; dalteparin; glucocorticoids; heparin; intravital microscopy; leukotrienes; myeloperoxidase; neutrophils; stress; surgical flaps; rat;

    Abstract : Surgical tissue trauma is a strong stimulus for local inflammation, including leukocyte recruitment. While such a response may be of importance for the defense against microorganisms, it is also clear that inflammation may contribute to further tissue injury. READ MORE
