  1. 1. Strategies for Monitoring of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Aquatic Environment

    Author : Pär Hallgren; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vitellogenin; Endocrine disruption; alkali-labile phosphate; Carassius carassius; steroid hormones; Oncorhynchus mykiss; membrane exraction; supercritical fluid extraction; GC;

    Abstract : The protein biomarker vitellogenin in fish is discussed alongside alterative strategies for monitoring of endocrine disrupting chemicals. The first objective was to find a cheap, robust and generic method for the quantification of vitellogenin. READ MORE

  2. 2. Responses of male crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and goldfish (Carassius auratus) to hormonal sex pheromones

    Author : Rickard Bjerselius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : .... READ MORE

  3. 3. Phenotypic plasticity and the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp

    Author : Lars Pettersson; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Benefits; Costs; Predation; Chemical cues; Fish; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have investigated factors (cues, benefits, and costs) affecting the evolution of an inducible morphological defence in crucian carp (Carassius carassius). Inducible defences are favoured over permanent defences when prey have reliable cues to detect predators, when defences are effective but costly, and when predation pressure is variable and unpredictable, but sometimes strong. 4. 4. Mechanisms of failure and survival in the anoxic fish brain : With focus on the crucian carp

    Author : Dan Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Neural responses to anoxia were studied in two fish species, the rainbow trout(Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the crucian carp (Carassius carassius). The rainbow troutbrain reacted to anoxia by a massive release of excitatory amino acids and K+ into theextracellular compartment, in a fashion very much like the brain of mammals duringanoxia. 5. 5. Defence on Demand : A physiological perspective on phenotypic plasticity in anti-predator traits

    Author : Jerker Vinterstare; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phenotypic plasticity; inducible defences; stress physiology; cortisol; immune function; trade-offs; sexual dimorphism; crucian carp; visual ecology; predator-prey interactions; POMC pro-opiomelanocortin ; colour change; eco-immunology; Anti-predator defences; Inducible morphological defence; Phenotypic plasticity; Stress physiology; Cortisol; Immune function; Crucian carp; Predator-prey interactions; Trade-offs; Sexual dimorphism; POMC; Pro-opiomelanocortin; Visual ecology; Eye evolution; Melanin; Eco-immunology; Pace-of-life; Behavioural plasticity;

    Abstract : Almost all species face some degree of predation risk, and, hence, evolution has produced a plethora of anti-predator defences. However, anti-predator strategies require resources, and the prevailing risk of becoming prey is influenced by many factors and rarely constant across time and space. READ MORE
