    Abstract : Over the last decade environmental agencies worldwide have escalated their work to phase out animal testing for the purposes of chemical regulation. Meanwhile the number of commercially available chemicals and the requirements for hazard assessments have both increased, creating a large need for substitution of traditional in vivo assays with in vitro tests. 2. 2. Autonomic cardiac control in patients with epilepsy : spectral analysis of heart rate variability

    Author : Håkan Persson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : SUDEP; autonomic nervous system; heart rate variability; epilepsy; carbamazepine; epilepsy surgery;

    Abstract : The heart is affected by the central nervous system via sympathetic and para-sympathetic efferents from autonomic centres in the brain stem. By assessing the beat to beat variation of the RR-intervals of the heart, i.e. the heart rate variability (HRV) it is possible to separately analyse sympathetic and parasympathetic effects on the heart. 3. 3. A pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic study of an antiepileptic drug (lamotrigine) in young patients with drug-resistant generalized epilepsy

    Author : Ann-Sofie Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : High-performance liquid chromatography; Antiepileptic drugs; Therapeutic drug monitoring; Lamotrigine; Carbamazepine; Epilepsy; Children; Lennox-Gastaut; Efficacy; CSF; [gamma]aminobuturic acid; Glutamate; Aspartate; Glycine; EEG;

    Abstract : The purpose of the present study was to investigate the safety and efficacy of lamotrigine in young patients with drug-resistant generalised epilepsy. This group of patients is difficult to study due to a high seizure frequency, comorbidity and the frequent use of polytherapy. READ MORE

  4. 4. Effects of ozonated sewage effluents and pharmaceuticals in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

    Author : Johannes Pohl; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The aquatic environment is the main destination for many organic pollutants originating from human activity. Pharmaceuticals are significant contributors to this pollutant cocktail. READ MORE

  5. 5. Source, occurrence, and fate of pharmaceuticals in natural waters

    Author : Atlasi Daneshvar; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : The consumption of pharmaceuticals has increased in the last few decades. After usage, pharmaceuticals are excreted via urine and feces and transported to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) where they are subjected to treatment processes, and finally discharged into rivers. READ MORE
