  1. 21. The Threat to the Baltic Salmon - a Combination of Persistent Pollutants, Parasite and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Maria Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Salmo salar; Atlantic salmon; polychlorinated biphenyls; Animal ecology; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; lake Vänern; lake Vättern; Baltic Sea; Eubothrium crassum; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; AHR; consumption advice; stable isotopes; astaxanthin; EROD; M74; antioxidants; biomagnification; cestodes; parasites; DDT; Djurekologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; PCB;

    Abstract : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. 2. 22. Species interactions and energy transfer in aquatic food webs

    Author : Jens Munk Nielsen; Monika Winder; Sture Hansson; Michael T. Brett; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Aquatic food webs; zooplankton; stable isotope analysis amino acids; molecular diet analysis; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Food webs are structured by intricate nodes of species interactions which govern the flow of organic matter in natural systems. Despite being long recognized as a key component in ecology, estimation of food web functioning is still challenging due to the difficulty in accurately measuring species interactions within a food web. 3. 23. Responses of benthic-pelagic coupling to environmental change

    Author : Per Hedberg; Monika Winder; Martin Kainz; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Benthic-pelagic coupling; Stable isotopes; Fatty acids; Baltic Sea; Plankton; Food webs; Benthos; Marine Ecology; marin ekologi;

    Abstract : Changing abiotic factors, like temperature and light are important drivers of seasonality, affecting aquatic ecosystems and organisms annually in a predictable pattern, structuring species composition, growth, reproduction and trophic interactions. As a consequence of human induced climate change, coastal ecosystems are seeing a disruption in the predictability of annual cycles. READ MORE

  4. 24. Stable isotope studies of contaminant and material transport in Baltic pelagic food-webs

    Author : Carl Rolff; Nicholas J.P Owen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; zoologi; Zoology;

    Abstract : Both carbon and nitrogen appear in nature as different stable isotopes. Many natural processes affect the relative proportions of heavy and light isotopes in predictable ways. The isotopic composition of organisms and other organic materials can therefore serve as records of the processes involved in their formation. READ MORE

  5. 25. Novel methods of tandem mass spectrometry in life sciences

    Author : Mohammadhassan Gharibi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Mass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique widely employed for isotopic analysis and species identification in numerous research fields. Isotopic analysis involves precisely measuring stable isotopes within a sample, offering valuable insights into its origin, environment, and biological processes. READ MORE
