  1. 6. Towards Immunotherapy of Midgut Carcinoid Tumors

    Author : Sofia Vikman; Thomas Tötterman; Valeria Giandomenico; Bengt Widegren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Immunology; midgut carcinoid; gene expression; immunotherapy; tumor antigen; VMAT-1; T cell; HLA-A*0201-binding peptide; IFNγ; regulatory T cell; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Classical midgut carcinoids belong to neuroendocrine tumors of the gastroenteropancreatic tract (GEP-NETs) and are associated with serotonin overproduction. The term midgut is derived from the tumors’ embryological site of origin: enterochromaffin cells in the lower jejunum, ileum, caecum and the ascending colon. READ MORE

  2. 7. Midgut carcinoid tumours - biochemical and therapeutic aspects

    Author : Gunnel Westberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; carcinoid syndrome; valvular heart disease; 5-HT; chromogranins; octreotide; hepatic arterial embolization;

    Abstract : The biology of human midgut carcinoid tumour was studied experimentally in primary cell culture and clinically in patients with the midgut carcinoid syndrome. In cell cultures, tumour cells had a secretory pattern of 5-HTP, 5-HT and 5-HIAA specific for each tumour indicating individual regulation of synthesis/degradation. READ MORE

  3. 8. Epidemiological Studies of Small Intestinal Tumours

    Author : Niklas Zar; Per Hellman; Lars Holmberg; Jonas Rastad; Anders Bergenfelz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Surgery; small intestine; adenocarcinoma; carcinoid; epidemiology; survival; second malignancies; causes of death; Crohn s disease; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Malignant tumours of the small intestine are rare. Age-standardised incidence in Europe is between 0.5-1.5 per 100 000. READ MORE

  4. 9. Tumour Biological Factors Characterizing Metastasizing Serotonin-producing Ileocaecal Carcinoids

    Author : Janet Lynn Cunningham; Eva Tiensuu Janson; Kjell Öberg; Irvin M. Modlin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Internal medicine; endocrine tumour; midgut carcinoid; serotonin-producing neuroendocrine carcinoma; prognosis; morphology; tachykinin; connective tissue growth factor; islet autoantigen-2; morphology; carcinoid syndrome; Invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : In this study, metastasizing serotonin-producing ileocaecal carcinoid tumours (MSPCs) were examined for biological characteristics that could be used to define clinically relevant subgroups within this patient population. Possible targets for new treatment options were also explored. READ MORE
