1. Cardiac hypertrophy : transcription patterns, hypertrophic progression and extracellular signalling
Abstract : Background: The aim of this thesis was to study transcription patterns and extracellular signalling of the hypertrophic heart to better understand the mechanisms initiating, controlling and maintaining cardiac hypertrophy.Cardiac hypertrophy is a risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. 2. Lung Emphysema & Cardiac Function
Abstract : Patients with severe lung emphysema have poor quality of life because of impaired lung function and reduced exercise tolerance. Concomitant heart disease in severe emphysema is well recognised. The prevailing view is that mainly the right side of the heart is involved, while the issue of left ventricular (LV) involvement is less studied. READ MORE

3. Metabolic aspects of cardiac arrhythmias
Abstract : Cardiac arrhythmias are an important cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with cardiac diseases. Sudden death due to ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation (VT/VF) in the setting of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and heart failure (HF) is a frequent cause of premature death. READ MORE

4. The role of fibroblast growth factor-23 in chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder
Abstract : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) was initially identified as the causative factor of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets. Further studies confirmed that FGF23 is predominantly expressed in the osteocytes and osteoblasts of bone and that circulating FGF23 acts on the kidney to inhibit renal phosphate reabsorption and 1,25(OH)2D3 hydroxylation. 5. Studies on malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmias and their treatment with an implantable defibrillator
Abstract : Aims: To investigate the hemodynamic, metabolic and autonomic effects of ventricular fibrillation per se during maintained circulation. To study the defibrillation threshold (DFT) and efficacy of a new and thinner ICD lead (DSP) compared with the standard lead (C). READ MORE
