  1. 1. Stem cells for cardiac regeneration

    Author : Ivana Bulatović; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Recent studies have demonstrated a turnover of cardiomyocytes throughout the adult life. Whether this regenerative potential is due to proliferation and differentiation of resident stem cells or to the dedifferentiation of adult cardiomyocytes remains unclear. READ MORE

  2. 2. Vascular progenitor cells in arterial remodeling

    Author : Monika K Grudzinska; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of global mortality and physical disability mainly due to the complications such as myocardial infarction or stroke. Physiological healing reaction takes place in the diseased vessel wall aimed to repair the vessel after an injury. READ MORE

  3. 3. Embryonic and adult cardiac stem cells : molecular, electrophysical and immunological characteristics for cardiac repair

    Author : Rami Genead; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : human resident cardiac progenitor;

    Abstract : Background: The concept of myocardial regeneration by means of stimulating the endogenous regenerative potential in situ is an attractive approach. This offers distinct advantages to stem cell implantation where the problems with engraftment and immune rejection are avoided. READ MORE

  4. 4. Identification and characterization of progenitor populations in the human adult heart

    Author : Joakim Sandstedt; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cardiac progenitor cells; heart; C-kit; Side Population; Stage Specific Embryonic Antigens; FACS;

    Abstract : Traditionally, the heart has been regarded as a non-regenerative organ. During the last 10 years, this notion has been challenged. By 14C measurements, it was calculated that at the age of 50, about 45% of all cardiomyocytes had formed after birth. READ MORE

  5. 5. Stem cells in the adult heart - 3D culture, isolation of side population cells and search for a stem cell niche

    Author : Kristina Vukusic; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Heart; cardiac stem cells; Stem cell niche; Atrioventricular junction; Side population; 3D culture;

    Abstract : Cardiac tissue shows a poor regenerative capacity. From 2003 reports, mostly based on animal models, have showed existence of stem cells also in the heart. Using 14C measurements, a slow but steady turnover of the cardiac cells was shown in humans, around 1%/year. As a source for this regeneration endogenous stem cells have been suggested. READ MORE
