1. Insulin Resistance : Causes, biomarkers and consequences
Abstract : The worldwide increasing number of persons affected by largely preventable diseases like diabetes demands better prevention and treatment. Insulin is required for effective utilisation of circulating nutrients. READ MORE

2. Targeted multiplex proteomics for risk stratification in patients with cardiovascular disease
Abstract : Risk stratification is valuable in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Proteins involved in different pathophysiological processes in atherosclerosis have shown prognostic capacity. A new technology, Proximity Extension Assay (PEA), enables the simultaneous analysis of numerous plasma proteins from a minimal amount of plasma. READ MORE

3. Heart failure : biomarker effect and influence on quality of life
Abstract : Background and aims: Heart failure (HF) is a life threatening condition and optimal handling is necessary to reduce risk of therapy failure. The aims of this thesis were: (Paper I) to examine whether BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide)-guided HF treatment improves morbidity and mortality when compared with HF therapy implemented by a treating physician at sites experienced in managing patients with HF according to guidelines; (Paper II) to investigate how to define a responder regarding optimal cut-off level of BNP to predict death, need for hospitalisation, and worsening HF and to determine the optimal time to apply the chosen cut-off value; (Paper III) to evaluate how Health-Related Quality of Life (HR-QoL) is influenced by natriuretic peptide guiding and to study how HR-QoL is affected in responders compared to non-responders; (Paper IV) to evaluate the impact of patient age on clinical outcomes, and to evaluate the impact of duration of the HF disease on outcomes and the impact of age and HF duration on BNP concentration. 4. Filamin A in Cardiovascular Remodeling
Abstract : Filamin A (FLNA) is a large actin-binding cytoskeletal protein that stabilizes actin networks and integrates them with cell membranes. FLNA is therefore important for cell motility and organ development. READ MORE

5. Leptin and the Intersection of Cardiovascular Disease, Metabolism, and Adipose Tissue
Abstract : According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, and it is the leading cause of death worldwide. The risk factors for CVD are divided into two major classes: non-modifiable (age, gender, family history) and modifiable (including tobacco use, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, dyslipidemia, and stress).
