    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; caries; fluoride; caries incidence; caries prevalence; caries risk; orthodontics; mouth rinse; risk assessment; toothpaste;

    Abstract : Background: Scientifically based guidelines to predict and prevent caries during orthodontic treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances are lacking. Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to improve caries risk assessment before orthodontic treatment, as well as to evaluate caries risk and improve caries prevention during treatment. READ MORE

  2. 2. Dentine caries : acid tolerant microorganisms and aspects on collagen degradation

    Author : Anders Hedenbjörk Lager; Malmö högskola; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dental Caries; Collagen; Cariogenic Agents;

    Abstract : Karies är en stor folksjukdom, trots att den både kan förebyggas och behandlas effektivt. Om man inte ingriper preventivt och låter det naturliga förloppet råda, kommer kariesangreppet till slut att bryta igenom emaljen och involvera även den underliggande dentinvävnaden. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fluoride varnish programmes for adolescents at school – caries, conceptions and costs

    Author : Eva-Karin Bergström; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to study the effects on caries, conceptions and costs of school-based fluoride varnish programmes for adolescents in Sweden. Paper I was a 3.5-year randomised controlled study of 1,143 adolescents, in a low caries prevalence area. READ MORE

  4. 4. On Dental Caries and Caries-Related Factors in Children and Teenagers

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adolescents; Approximal caries; Caries experience; Early childhood caries; Oral hygiene; Fluoride toothpaste; Plaque; Psychosocial factors; Snacking habits; Body mass index;

    Abstract : On Dental Caries and Caries-Related Factors in Children and Teenagers Anita Alm, Department of Cariology, Institute of Odontology, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Box 450, SE-405 30 G?teborg, Sweden Dental caries is still a common disease among children and adolescents. The aims of the present thesis were therefore: 1) to investigate the approximal caries prevalence in posterior teeth in 15-year-olds, 2) to study past caries experience in the primary dentition in relation to future caries development and need for treatment, 3) to investigate factors during early childhood which are associated with caries development later in life, and 4) to study the association between age-specific body mass index (isoBMI) and approximal caries status in 15-year-olds. 5. 5. Effect of Probiotics on Caries-related Variables

    Author : Sahal Alforaidi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bacterial interference; ; Caries; Caries prevention; ; Dental biofilm; ; Dental plaque; ; Lactobacilli; Lactobacillus reuteri; ; Streptococcus mutans; ; Plaque acidogenicity; ; Probiotics; qPCR; Saliva; Virulence;

    Abstract : In relation to the caries disease, the aims of this thesis were to investigate the effect of probiotic drops on different caries-related variables in vivo (Papers I & III), on interference capability and genetic response to different metabolites in vitro (II) and systematically to review the best mode and dose of administration based on the examined oral outcomes (IV). The effects on colonisation and cariogenic bacteria were studied in plaque and saliva via plating and qPCR-analyses in teenagers and orthodontic patients after short-term exposure. READ MORE
