  1. 1. Multifunctional Biomimetic Scaffolds Tailored for Cardiac Regeneration

    Author : Abeni Wickham; Daniel Aili; Bo Liedberg; Carsten Werner; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Nature has had millions of years to perfect the structural components of the human body, but has also produced the dysfunctions that result in the cancers and diseases, which ruin that perfection. Congenital heart defects, and myocardial infarction lead to scarring that remodels heart muscle, decreasing the contractility of the heart, with profound consequences for the host. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hyaluronan Based Biomaterials with Imaging Capacity for Tissue Engineering

    Author : Yu Zhang; Dmitri Ossipov; Carsten Werner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; hyaluronan; hydrogel; scaffold; tissue engineering; imaging; interpenetrating network; MRI; fluorescence imaging; scaffold degradation;

    Abstract : This thesis presents the preparation of hyaluronan-based biomaterials with imaging capability and their application as scaffolds in tissue engineering. First, we have synthesized HA derivatives functionalized with different chemoselective groups. READ MORE

  3. 3. Initiation of ventilation, surfactant treatment, and lung function after preterm birth

    Author : Lars Björklund; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiration; Artificial; Pediatrics; Pediatri; Respiratory Function Tests; Pulmonary Surfactants; Newborn; Respiratory Distress Syndrome; Infant; Premature; Animals;

    Abstract : The thesis investigates lung function and the effects of rescue surfactant treatment in mechanically ventilated preterm human infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and the effects of ventilation at birth on the response to surfactant supplementation in preterm lambs. To assess lung function, the author recorded static pressure-volume (P-V) curves during passive deflation from total lung capacity (TLC) to ambient pressure and measured end-expiratory lung volume (FRC) during mechanical ventilation by tracer gas washout.
