  1. 6. Adsorption kinetics of cationic polyacrylamides on cellulose fibres and its influence on fibre flocculation

    Author : Daniel Solberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : Adsorption; bridging; cationic polymers; cellulose fibres; electrosteric stabilisation flocculation; ;

    Abstract : The adsorption of cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) and silicananoparticles onto a model surface of silicon oxide wascompared with the adsorption of C-PAM to fibres and theirinfluence on flocculation of a fibre suspension. An increase inionic strength affects the polyelectrolyte adsorption indifferent ways for these two systems. READ MORE

  2. 7. Association of Amphiphiles and Polyelectrolytes with DNA

    Author : Yulia S Mel'nikova; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; cryo-TEM; SAXS; fluorescence microscopy; DNA condensation; DNA-polyelectrolyte; DNA- amphiphile interactions; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : DNA- cationic amphiphile and DNA-cationic polymer systems were studied with respect to the intermolecular interactions, as well as structure and stability of formed complexes. The thesis is divided in two parts: one section is a summary and the other section contains five papers. READ MORE

  3. 8. Tailored cellulosic materials by physical adsorption of polyelectrolytes

    Author : Andrew Marais; Lars Wågberg; Andreas Fery; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The growing interest in using bio-based resources has made forest-based cellulose (used as fibre and nanofibril building elements) a good candidate for the development of new materials. In order to be used in commercial applications, cellulose must however be processed and/or functionalized to provide the final material with specific properties. READ MORE

  4. 9. The creation of antibacterial fibres through physical adsorption of polyelectrolytes

    Author : Josefin Illergård; Monica Ek; Lars Wågberg; Malmsten Martin; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; antibacterial; polyelectrolyte multilayers; polyvinylamine; contact-active antibacterial surfaces;

    Abstract : Contact-active antibacterial surfaces with irreversibly attached antibacterial com-pounds are a sustainable alternative to traditional biocides. No chemicals are released into nature and the antibacterial mechanism reduces the risk of the evolution of re-sistant bacteria. READ MORE

  5. 10. Molecular Interactions in Thin Films of Biopolymers, Colloids and Synthetic Polyelectrolytes

    Author : Johansson Erik; Lars Wågberg; Andreas Fery; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Polyelectrolyte multilayers; Layer-by-Layer assembly; Adhesion; Adsorption; Young s modulus; Mechanical buckling; AFM; JKR; SPAR; QCM-D; SIEBIMM; PAH; PAA; Starch; NFC; Nanocellulose;

    Abstract : The development of the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique has turned out to be an efficient way to physically modify the surface properties of different materials, for example to improve the adhesive interactions between fibers in paper. The main objective of the work described in this thesis was to obtain fundamental data concerning the adhesive properties of wood biopolymers and LbL films, including the mechanical properties of the thin films, in order to shed light on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the adhesion between these materials.
