  1. 1. Keep it rolling : Straight-line orientation in South African ball-rolling dung beetles

    Author : Lana Khaldy; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ball-rolling dung beetle; Orientation; Heading direction network; Compass; Weighting; Celestial cues; Sun; Polarised light;

    Abstract : Representing a substantial range and variety in morphological and ecological niche, found on all continents of the globe (except for the Antarctic), the ball-rolling dung beetles provide an excellent model in which to study the heading direction network and the factors by which it is influenced. As soon as a ball-rolling dung beetle has located a fresh dung pile to feed on, it immediately starts shaping a piece of dung into a ball, rolling it away from the dung pat in as straight of a trajectory as the terrain allows. 2. 2. Celestial Orientation in Dim Light

    Author : Marie Dacke; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polarisation pattern; moon; polrised light detection; twilight; dim light; dung beetle; Zoologi; spider; vision; orientation; Zoology;

    Abstract : The polarization pattern of skylight offers many animals a reference for visual compass orientation. In those cases when this optical compass is identified, the receptors involved are often confined to a small part of an eye built predominantly for other visual tasks. READ MORE

  3. 3. Magnetic orientation in migratory birds

    Author : Rachel Muheim; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; cue-conflict; clock-shift; cue calibration; geomagnetic field; high Arctic latitudes; Emlen funnel; magnetic compass; magnetoreception; navigation; migration; bird; orientation;

    Abstract : My thesis focuses on magnetic orientation in migratory birds, i.e. how they can perceive information from the Earth’s magnetic field and use it for orientation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Stopover behaviour in migratory songbirds: timing, orientation and departures

    Author : Sissel Sjöberg; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; flight duration; orientation; departure timing; stopover behaviour; stopover duration; flight behaviour; reverse migration; route choice; compass calibration; passerines; Bird migration;

    Abstract : Songbird migrants use stopovers between flight bouts to rest and refuel for the upcoming flights. Behaviours affecting where, when and how long to stay at stopover sites will affect how successful the overall migration will be, which has significant consequences for the overall fitness and mortality of the birds.
