  1. 16. Molecular mechanism of plasmid copy number control in Yersinia

    Author : Tifaine Héchard; Helen Wang; Javier Pizarro-Cerda; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Yersinia pseudotuberculosis; plasmid copy number; T3SS; infection; ddPCR; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : The ability of pathogenic bacteria to cause disease depends on various virulence mechanisms. The three pathogenic species of Yersinia use a type III secretion system (T3SS) to translocate effector proteins into host cells and disrupt the immune system. This T3SS is encoded on a 70kb, low-copy, virulence plasmid. READ MORE

  2. 17. Engraftment of Pancreatic Islets in Alternative Transplantation Sites and the Feasibility of in vivo Monitoring of Native and Transplanted Beta-Cell Mass

    Author : Daniel Espes; Per-Ola Carlsson; Joey Lau; Mia Phillipson; Eelco de Koning; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Type 1 diabetes; Islet transplantation; Alternative implantation sites; Exendin-4; Positron Emission Tomography; 5-hydroxy tryptophan; Beta-cell mass; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Islet transplantation is a possible curative treatment for type 1 diabetes (T1D). Currently the liver dominates as implantation site, despite the many challenges encountered at this site.Acute hypoxia in islets transplanted to muscle and omentum, two possible alternative sites, was prevailing. 3. 18. Giant cell arteritis. Epidemiological, morphological and molecular genetic studies

    Author : Vigdís Pétursdóttir; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Giant cell arteritis; temporal artery; aorta; epidemiology; atrophy; calcification; estrogen receptor a; morphometry; immunocytochemistry; Western blot; molecular genetics;

    Abstract : Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, affecting large and medium-sized arteries, predominantly in postmenopausal women. Its pathogenesis is probably multifactorial. Several studies suggest that GCA is an antigen-driven disease. READ MORE

  4. 19. Miniaturised Microwell-based Cell Assays

    Author : Emilie Weibull; Helene Andersson Svahn; Albert van den Berg; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microwell; miniaturisation; high-resolution imaging; high-throughput; cell culture; single-cell; clone; heterogeneity; antibiotic susceptibility testing; concentration gradient; interfacing; microchannels; cell retrieval;

    Abstract : Cell heterogeneity in genetically identical cell populations is becoming a well-known and important phenomenon in cell biology. Current methods commonly utilise population-based analysis founded on averaged result. Hence there is a need for high-throughput cell assays on the single-cell level. READ MORE

  5. 20. The relationship between inflammation and structural changes in the airways of the lower and upper respiratory tract : Studies in patients with asthma, Sjögren's syndrome, rhinitis and children with otitis media with effusion

    Author : Kawa Amin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; bronchial hyperresponsiveness; inflammatory cells; asthma; rhinitis; Sjögren s syndrome; children with otitis media with effusion; immunohistochemistry; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The pathophysiology of asthma, Sjögrens syndrome (SS), rhinitis, and otitis media with effusion (OME) in children has been extensively investigated in upper and lower respiratory tract, respectively, and shown to comprise structural changes in the airways and involvement of inflammatory cells. By comparing diseases that have bronchial hyperresponsivenses or mucosal inflammation as a common denominator, it may be possible to learn more about the mechanisms underlying inflammation in the upper and lower respiratory tract.
