  1. 1. Interaction Between Drosophila melanogaster mbn-2 Cells and Bacteria

    University dissertation from Uppsala : Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis

    Author : Karin Johansson; Uppsala universitet.; [2005]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell biology; Drosophila; innate immunity; bacteria; host - pathogen interaction; Cellbiologi; NATURAL SCIENCES Biology Cell and molecular biology Cell biology; NATURVETENSKAP Biologi Cell- och molekylärbiologi Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Innate immunity relies on a repertoire of germline-encoded non-rearranging pattern recognition receptors that bind to invariant microbial surface molecules. This event initiates a number of signal transduction cascades that lead to humoral and cellular defense responses like synthesis of antimicrobial peptides, phagocytosis and coagulation – mechanisms that efficiently fight infectious microorganisms and have been evolutionary conserved to exist in parallel with the antibody-based adaptive immunity found in vertebrates. Abstract : Infectious diseases such as malaria and relapsing fever borreliosis (RF), cause severe human mortality and morbidity in developing countries. Malaria, caused by Plasmodium spp. parasites, is estimated by the World Health Organization to cause 1.5-2. READ MORE

  3. 3. Heterogeneous electron transfer studies with ligninolytic redox enzymes and living bacteria. Applications in biosensors and biofuel cells

    University dissertation from Lund University

    Author : Vasile Coman; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; [2009]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cellobiose dehydrogenase; direct electron transfer; mediated electron transfer; self-assembled monolayer; flow injection analysis; amperometric biosensor; E. coli; succinate:quinone reductase; biofuel cell; B. subtilis; whole-cell biosensor;

    Abstract : The catalytic properties and the inter-domain electron transfer of cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) from the ascomycete fungus Myriococcum thermophilum adsorbed on graphite and thiol (SAM) modified gold electrodes were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, flow injection amperometry and UV-Vis spectroelectrochemistry. The fabrication and characterisation of a noncompartmentalised, mediator and cofactor free glucose–oxygen biofuel cell well-operating in glucose-containing buffers and human blood serum was performed. 4. 4. Analyzing the properties and biosynthesis of β-glucans from Gluconacetobacter and poplar

    University dissertation from Stockholm : KTH Royal Institute of Technology

    Author : Erik Malm; KTH.; [2014]
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cellulose synthesis; Bioinformatics; Proteomics; Cell wall;

    Abstract : Glucans are polysaccharides integral to many materials and biological functions. Under the umbrella of Biomime, the Swedish Center for Biomimetic Fiber Engineering, this work has aimed to improve basic understanding of the biosynthesis of such glucans. READ MORE

  5. 5. Assessment of precursor cell proliferation in normal and injured adult mammalian brains

    University dissertation from Stockholm : KTH Royal Institute of Technology

    Author : Hong Zhu; Göteborgs universitet.; Gothenburg University.; [2005]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; 6-OHDA; astrocytes; cell proliferation; neural stem cells; neurogenesis; precursor cells; seizure; SVZ-OB pathway;

    Abstract : In the adult mammalian brain, new neurons are generated from neural stem cells (NSCs) which reside in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle wall and in the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus (DG) in the hippocampus. The biology of persistent NSCs in the adult brain is poorly understood. READ MORE
