    Abstract : The extracellular matrix is (ECM) is a network of large, structural proteins and polysaccharides, important for cellular behavior, tissue development and maintenance. Present thesis describes work exploring ECM as scaffolds for tissue engineering by manipulating cells cultured in vitro or by influencing ECM expression in vivo. READ MORE

  2. 2. Insulin secretion and ASNA-1-dependent function of the endoplasmic reticulum in C. elegans

    Author : Ola Billing; Gautam Kao; Jussi Jäntti; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cell research; cellforskning; genetik; Genetics;

    Abstract : ASNA1 is a well-conserved ATPase involved in a wide range of functions, including cisplatin resistance, growth control, insulin secretion and targeting of tail-anchored (TA) proteins to membranes. It is a positive regulator of insulin secretion both in the roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans and in humans. READ MORE

  3. 3. A study of bacterial adhesion on a single-cell level by means of force measuring optical tweezers and simulations

    Author : Oscar Björnham; Staffan Schedin; Ove Axner; Kirstine Berg-Sörensen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics; cell research; cellforskning; molecular cell biology; molekylär cellbiologi;

    Abstract : The intriguing world of microbiology is nowadays accessible for detailed exploration at a single–molecular level. Optical tweezers are a novel instrument that allows for non–invasive manipulation of single cells by the sole use of laser light and operates on the nano– and micrometer scale which corresponds to the same length scale as living cells. 4. 4. Mesenchymal stem cells for repair of the peripheral and central nervous system

    Author : Maria Brohlin; Mikael Wiberg; Martin Birchall; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone marrow-derived stromal cells; Schwann cells; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord injury; Neurotransplantation; anatomi; Human Anatomy; cell research; cellforskning;

    Abstract : Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to provide neuroprotection after transplantation into the injured nervous system. The present thesis investigates whether adult human and rat MSC differentiated along a Schwann cell lineage could increase their expression of neurotrophic factors and promote regeneration after transplantation into the injured peripheral nerve and spinal cord. Abstract : Islet transplantation has found its niche in diabetes treatment. It has contributed to a better quality of life and better glycemic control of patients with diabetes suffering from severe hypoglycemia that are not eligible for vascularized pancreas transplantation. Islet isolation is a technically challenging procedure. READ MORE
