  1. 1. Modulation of the calcium-force relationship in smooth muscle by polyamines and metabolic inhibition

    Author : Karl Swärd; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; metabolic inhibition; polyamines; excitation-contraction coupling; smooth muscle; intracellular calcium; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : The relationship between intracellular free calcium ([Ca2+]i) and force in smooth muscle was investigated in receptor-coupled permeabilized preparations and by fluorimetry of the calcium indicator Fura 2 in intact smooth muscle. The time integral of spontaneous [Ca2+]i transients in the intact rat portal vein was decreased by cyanide and, during tonic contraction, cyanide reduced force without changing [Ca2+]i implying metabolic sensitivity of both membrane excitation and [Ca2+]i - activation of the contractile proteins. 2. 2. Cholesterol-lowering and anti-atherogenic effects of oats in mice

    Author : Kristina E Andersson; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cholesterol; Inflammation; Bile acids; Atherosclerosis; Oats; Beta-glucans;

    Abstract : The cholesterol-lowering effect of oats is well established, but the crucial properties eliciting this effect need to be further investigated to optimize the use of oats as functional foods. Furthermore, there are almost no reports investigating the effect of oats on atherosclerosis development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Developmental regulation of smooth muscle contraction in the urinary bladder

    Author : Mari Ekman; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; newborn; Rho-kinase; cellular signaling; muscarinic receptors; calcium sensitivity; protein kinase C; non-muscle myosin; myosin light chain phosphatase;

    Abstract : Smooth muscle cells in the urinary bladder are involved in the control of urine filling and emptying. We have used mice to study the contractile regulation of urinary bladder smooth muscle during the fetal period. READ MORE

  4. 4. Role of Caveolae and miRNAs in Regulation of Urinary Bladder Function

    Author : Mardjaneh Karbalaei; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The urinary bladder is responsible for storage and expulsion of urine. Proper urination depends on an ability of the bladder to adjust to increasing volume and to contract during micturition. A disturbance of bladder contractility may affect continence. READ MORE

  5. 5. Transcriptional control in the vascular wall. Actin-responsive coactivators and smooth muscle transcripts

    Author : Katarzyna Krawczyk; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death globally. In the European Union (EU) alone, CVD accounts for 1.8 million deaths each year. CVD is a group of disorders involving the heart and the blood vessels. READ MORE
