2. Mesenchymal stem cells for repair of the peripheral and central nervous system
Abstract : Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to provide neuroprotection after transplantation into the injured nervous system. The present thesis investigates whether adult human and rat MSC differentiated along a Schwann cell lineage could increase their expression of neurotrophic factors and promote regeneration after transplantation into the injured peripheral nerve and spinal cord. 3. Studies of the Biology of Intrathecal Treatment in Progressive MS
Abstract : Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, inflammatory, autoimmune disease, affecting the central nervous system (CNS). About 85% of afflicted present with a relapsing-remitting form of the disease (RRMS), for which a breakthrough in treatment was made in 2008 with rituximab, an antibody directed towards CD20, a surface antigen on B-cells. 4. Oligodendroglial (dys)function in alpha-synucleinopathies
Abstract : The complexity of a-synucleinopathies, which include multiple system atrophy (MSA) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), is not entirely understood. It is known that pathological accumulation of a-synuclein (a-syn) into proteinaceous aggregates is a cellular hallmark of these diseases. READ MORE

5. Stem cell-based models to study cellular alterations in Parkinson’s Disease
Abstract : Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative movement disorder. Despite investigative efforts into the pathogenesis of the disease, the aetiology and mechanism of PD remains unknown, with multiple factors and cellular pathways known to play a part. READ MORE
