  1. 1. Pathogenesis of infections related to foreign devices within the cerebral ventricles

    Author : Fredrik Lundberg; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteriology; Microbiology; CSF-shunt; complement activation; vitronectin; hydrocephalus; coagulase-negative staphylococci; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Coagulase-negative staphyloccoci (CoNS) are the most frequently isolated micro-organisms from infected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts and temporary ventricular drainage catheters, used in modern neurosurgery. CoNS originate from the skinflora of the patient or the surgeon and gain access to the surface of the implant at the insertion, but the infection can erupt up to a year later or more. READ MORE

  2. 2. Physical Modeling of Brain and Head Kinematics

    Author : Johan Ivarsson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; brain injury; skull base; rotational acceleration; physical models; lateral ventricles; head kinematics; padding materials; sulci; free motion headform; brain kinematics;

    Abstract : The development of head injury criteria and countermeasures for head protection requires understanding of how different factors affect brain and head kinematics. In this thesis, 2D physical models of the human head were developed and used to evaluate how various factors affect brain kinematics during angular head kinematics. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage and post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation in preterm infants: new mechanistic insights and potential treatment strategies

    Author : Olga Romantsik; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prematurity; Intraventricular hemorrhage; Post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation; White matter injury; Gray matter injury; Preterm rabbits; Extracellular hemoglobin; a-1-microglobulin; animal IVH models; High frequency ultrasound; MRI; corticogenesis;

    Abstract : Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) is one of the major co-morbidities of premature birth associated with post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD) development, long-term neurodevelopmental impairment, behavioral problems, special educational needs, and dependency on social security.Hypothesis and aims: We believe that extravasated blood and further release of extracellular hemoglobin (Hb) are crucial in brain injury following IVH and consequent development of PHVD. 4. 4. Measurements in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus : Computerized neuropsychological test battery and intracranial pulse waves

    Author : Anders Behrens; Jan Malm; Anders Eklund; Eva Elgh; Niklas Lenfeldt; Marianne Juhler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hydrocephalus; Normal Pressure; Neuropsychological tests; Neuropsychology; Reliability and validity; Software; Dementia; intracranial pressure; spinal puncture; cerebrospinal fluid pressure; pulse pressure waves; Blood flow velocity; Middle cerebral artery; Pulsatility index; Neurology; neurologi;

    Abstract : Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (INPH) is a condition affecting gait, cognition and continence. Radiological examination reveals enlarged ventricles of the brain. A shunt that drains CSF from the ventricles to the abdomen often improves the symptoms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Analysis of ICP pulsatility and CSF dynamics : the pulsatility curve and effects of postural changes, with implications for idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus

    Author : Sara Qvarlander; Anders Eklund; Jan Malm; Richard Birgander; Martin U Schuhmann; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Cerebrospinal fluid; CSF dynamics; Intracranial pressure; Pulse pressure; Normal pressure hydrocephalus; Posture; Predictive tests; Mathematical modelling; Magnetic resonance imaging; Infusion tests;

    Abstract : The volume defined by the rigid cranium is shared by the brain, blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). With every heartbeat the arterial blood volume briefly increases and venous blood and CSF are forced out of the cranium, leading to pulsatility in CSF flow and intracranial pressure (ICP). READ MORE
