  1. 1. On certain genetic and metabolic risk factors for carotid stenosis and stroke

    Author : Pär Wanby; Lars Brudin; Martin Carlsson; Milita Crisby; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carotid artery diseases; Carrier proteins; genetics; Cerebrovascular accident; Cerebrovascular disorders; Genetic predisposition to disease; Polymorphism; genetic; Medicine; Medicin; Medicin;

    Abstract : The present study evaluated genetic and metabolic factors influencing the risk of acute cerebrovascular disease (CVD) and internal carotid artery stenosis (ICA stenosis) in a Swedish community. The threonine (T) containing protein of the FABP2 A54T gene polymorphism has a greater affinity for long chain fatty acids (FFAs) than the alanine (A) containing protein. READ MORE

  2. 2. Physical performance and physical activity in the later stage post-stroke

    Author : Christiane Carvalho; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cerebrovascular accident; exercise test; gait; healthy control; muscle strength; physical activity; physical therapy; rehabilitation; secondary prevention; stroke; walking;

    Abstract : Aims: The overall purpose of this thesis was to increase knowledge about physical performance and activity in the later stage post-stroke by measuring walking performance in different environments coupled to muscle strength, cardiorespiratory fitness evaluation and self-reported physical activity. Methods: The studies reported in the thesis included a total of 83 subjects with prior stroke living in the community and 144 clinically healthy subjects from the same area. READ MORE

  3. 3. STRENGTH TRAINING AFTER STROKE: EFFECTS ON MUSCLE FUNCTION, GAIT PERFORMANCE AND PERCEIVED PARTICIPATION

    Author : Ulla-Britt Flansbjer; Geriatrik; []

    Abstract : Background: Stroke is a major cause of serious disability and death. In Sweden approximately 30,000 people suffer from stroke each year, and 20% of them are under 65 years of age.Aim: The aim of this thesis was to study stroke among people aged 30-65 years. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies on energy expenditure in walking after stroke

    Author : Anna Danielsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Cerebrovascular accident; Energy expenditure; Rehabilitation; Walking;

    Abstract : After stroke, altered movement pattern involves low walking speed and increased energy cost as compared to normal. Cardiovascular disease is common in the stroke population. Knowledge about the physiological demands of various training interventions is important for the planning of exercise. READ MORE
